This past week, Cohen went down to Miami Beach City Hall and filed the papers for his candidacy. —
When Cohen says building “community”, that is literally what he’s done the past two years. He ran for the Miami Beach Commission in 2019, and was shocked at how Political Action Committee “dark money” worked against him with attack ads, so he decided to fight Citizens’ United by creating a Facebook Group, “Miami Beach Community”, which now has nearly six thousand members!
Cohen and his group love Miami Beach, and they are committed to changing local elections. Cohen himself pledges to dedicate time and his own money to run for office and lead one of America’s preeminent beach resorts, a large contributor to Florida’s gross domestic product (GDP) into the future.
“There is a leadership gap in Miami Beach right now,” said Cohen. “Miami Beach deserves qualified elected officials that aren’t beholden to special interests, and that hasn’t been the case in recent election cycles. We have too many pressing issues to deal with like the environment, clean water, and infrastructure projects to mitigate sea level rise-- to fool around and play politics. I just want to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”
Another important issue for Stephen is safety.
“My primary focus will be creating safer neighborhoods,” Cohen says. “I would like to increase police presence and get the community involved. We need more outreach to residents and business owners, and I would like to maximize our taxpayers’ funds by leveraging technology at City Hall.”
Cohen understands that Miami Beach needs development and an increase in tax dollars, but he would like to see a balance between hospitality and residential development. “We want development that encourages community members who are invested in Miami Beach, and that doesn’t happen when all new development is hotels”.
