Some places aren’t worth the trouble and influencers can ruin the good ones

Luggage storage startup Stasher recently launched an engagement campaign asking leading travel professionals their thoughts about the most overrated Instagram destinations in the world. The luggage storage company successfully completed a similar campaign rating the World’s Best Tourist Attractions. “We managed to make half the globe angry at us but hey -- don’t shoot the messenger! Our research was even picked up by Jimmy Kimmel.” - George Mouratidis, Head of Content at Stasher.

Prominent bloggers, tour guides, and hospitality industry professionals replied with some surprising answers:

● Santorini is the most overrated instagram spot in the world!
● Stonehenge fails to impress modern travelers.
● Bali’s traditional farmers are giving up rice cultivation to take photos with influencers.
● The resort town of Wanaka, New Zealand, made the list twice.
● The lack of parking in downtown Los Angeles continues to baffle visitors.

The responses also pointed out the need for Instagram influencers to respect the places they visit.

“The truth is, to get those pictures, people have to trespass and climb people’s roofs,” says blogger Kristen Cummings from, remarking about the situation in Santorini, Greece. “They jump over barriers and past ‘No trespassing’ signs. Sometimes they’re blocking an entire narrow walkway because they’re trying to get an Instagram-perfect picture.”

Anna Yan, Sonoma County public relations manager, is equally concerned about influencers ruining the places they visit. “When visitors stray from trails [and] stomp on wildflowers to attempt the perfect Instagram shot, the flowers are killed, and their seeds won’t beget the next generation of blossoms. It might feel like an ethereal and magical picture, but the truth behind the shot tells a story of disrespecting nature.”
