Solaren’s Jack Byrd Takes a Community First Approach To Company Culture

Jack Byrd III, co-founder of Solaren Risk Management, built a mission-driven company focused on community impact, employee recognition, and internal growth. He promotes from within, offering advancement to high-performing staff through a thorough interview process rooted in fairness and long-term team development.

-- When Jack Byrd III co-founded Solaren Risk Management in 2017, he brought more than just law enforcement experience to the table. The former Davidson County Sheriff's Office deputy and U.S. Marshal Service officer established a company culture centered on community impact and employee recognition.

"Jack is an entrepreneur at heart," says a rep from Solaren, explaining how Byrd's vision guided the company's rapid growth from a small office in a mall to a security operation with hundreds of contractors across the Southeast.

This growth has been fueled not by cutting corners but by building a team that "genuinely cares about the impact that the company has on the community, and they genuinely care about what we stand for," a representative from the company notes. "It doesn't work without that."

Promoting From Within

One of the defining aspects of Jack Byrd's leadership style is his commitment to promoting from within the organization. "Nine times out of 10, it comes from people who have worked for us out in the field and have really done a good job," Pepper explains.

"If we have a new hire who ends up working their way up, they do a really good job, they're always on time, they always have just a knack for security ... eventually they can work their way up into the office pretty quick," says Solaren’s representative.

When bringing someone into a leadership role, Byrd ensures they're truly prepared through a comprehensive interview process. "We have a panel interview for that person. We have them talk with multiple people individually, and then we have a panel interview where everybody sits together from both the admin and operations side," describes the company’s representative.

Recognizing Achievement

Under Jack Byrd's leadership, Solaren has developed a robust system for recognizing employee achievements. The company holds annual performance evaluations and rewards exceptional staff at the year-end Christmas party.

"If somebody based on those performance evaluations throughout the year has just done an exceptional job, they'll get an award, which usually correlates with some kind of pay boost," the rep notes. Awards can include a week's worth of additional pay or two weeks for significant achievements.

The company also provides immediate recognition for staff who go above and beyond. When one security officer applied a tourniquet to help a stabbing victim, the company honored him with both formal recognition and a special reward.

"We took him to see a show, whatever show he wanted, he picked it out. Everything that night was covered," Solaren’s representative recounts. "It's just little incentives that we do here and there throughout that we really want to reward people who do good in their job."

Training as Investment

Byrd's approach treats employee training not as a regulatory requirement but as an investment in both the individual and the company. The company offers a range of courses beyond basic certification, including report writing, supervisor training, and specialized certifications like the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care course. Completing these additional training programs is celebrated and rewarded.

"If you took that course, then you got your certificate and an award for it because that was a really big deal for us," a rep from the company says.

Community Engagement

Solaren's community involvement extends beyond security services. The company participates in events like the National Night Out Against Crime, where they provide school supplies to local students.

"We brought hundreds of pencils, erasers, markers, and more to ensure that our local students can succeed in our schools," stated the company’s website. "We also wanted the community to have a little fun with our staff at the event, so we brought a dunk tank."

The company has also taken a stand on social issues affecting Nashville. When Neo-Nazi groups caused disturbances in downtown Nashville, Byrd publicly condemned their actions and increased security presence at affected locations.

"Solaren Risk Management vehemently condemns the actions of these demonstrators," the company stated. "Together, we strive for a better, safer future for the city of Nashville."

This community focus extends to disaster response as well. When Hurricane Milton hit Florida, Solaren mobilized to protect vulnerable properties. "Our primary objective is to prevent looting, followed by life safety," Byrd stated, reflecting his understanding that security work directly impacts people's lives and livelihoods.

Through his leadership style, Jack Byrd has created a company culture where security work is viewed as community service. By providing clear advancement opportunities, recognizing achievement, investing in training, and engaging with community issues, he has built an organization that attracts staff who share his vision of security as more than just a job.
