impact indicators that can detect package jolts, providing recipients with more accurate information on the quality of goods transit services.
-- UK-based device maker ShockWatch believes it has a solution to careless shipment handling. It has developed an assortment of
The company’s primary product is its ShockWatch labels. These contain a tube filled with red liquid in suspension that breaks if G-forces exceed tolerable limits. When the package arrives at its destination, recipients can use it to detect impacts and report them to the sender.
“Once activated, the device cannot be reset,” the company says. “The aim is to influence the behaviour of handlers during the manufacturing and shipping process, encouraging them to view all shipments as valuable.”
Shockwatch also offers indicator clips which are a slightly more robust version of its stickers. Again, these tamper-proof devices mechanically activate, turning bright red during instances of mishandling.
“The goal is to improve quality assurance and increase the likelihood of zero-defect shipping,” ShockWatch explains. “Companies can better monitor their goods and work with recipients to ensure higher material handling standards throughout the supply chain.”
ShockWatch was invented by company founder, Ray Ruby. The idea came to him during the 1980s while watching droplets of rain on his car windscreen. When he broke, he noticed the deceleration disturbed the surface tension of the water globules, causing them to break. He wondered whether he could apply the same principle using plastic tubes, indicating a product’s handling quality during transit.
After much trial and error, he launched ShockWatch’s first shock and tilt sensors. He hoped these would help fight the battle against concealed damage in the parcel delivery sector, allowing companies to enhance standards.
Today, ShockWatch guarantees that its indicators will improve product handling monitoring in product supply chains. Its indicators serve as a visual deterrent to mishandling, encouraging workers to treat all parcels with care and respect, regardless of what they contain.
“We supply impact indicators with alert stickers, companion labels, and caution tape,” the brand confirms. “These additions help to communicate the presence of impact indicators on the packaging, encouraging better handling from the outset.”
Ultimately, ShockWatch’s accessories speed up resolution times in the event of a damage claim. Suppliers can gain clearer insight into who was to blame and clients can reject goods on arrival.
