-- RoadPrintz is offering a robotic pavement marking system that applies Department of Transportation-compliant road symbols without the use of physical stencils. Their system operates from a truck-mounted robotic arm and is designed to apply road markings while operators remain safely inside the vehicle.
"Our goal is to provide a method for applying standard road markings that keeps workers off the pavement and streamlines the process," said a RoadPrintz spokesperson. “Sadly, worker injuries and deaths are not uncommon when using traditional stencils.”
The system is built to paint various standard traffic symbols, including arrows, stop bars, crosswalks, and bike lane indicators. It functions without requiring personnel to be on the roadway during the application process. Operators use an onboard interface to select symbols from a digital library, which are then applied directly onto the pavement by the robotic arm.
The technology supports commonly used materials such as water-based latex, solvent-based acrylic, and certain hybrid epoxy paints. It also includes geolocation and automated data logging features to record placement and usage information.

The DOT virtual stencils for road markings and other equipment are structured to reduce time spent on layout and rework by incorporating automated controls that assist with alignment and measurement. Training requirements are minimal, with experienced pavement marking crews able to learn the system's operation within a short period.
"This technology is designed to align with current marking requirements while supporting operational efficiency and keeping the workers safely in the air-conditioned cab of the truck," the spokesperson added.
The robotic system is delivered as a dedicated RoadPrintz truck. It integrates standard painting equipment and is operated from within the cabin. The team at the firm continues to develop its robotic pavement marking system to align with roadway marking requirements and support safe, consistent symbol application.
