Remote-Control Toys – Parents’ Relief During New Zealand's New Lockdown

Share this news:

With New Zealand returning to lockdown after months of enjoying Zero Covid normality, remote control toys are helping parents keep bored kids entertained.

Numerous studies have shown how play forms an integral part in childhood development – from improving cognitive ability to increasing immunity and physical robustness. The more a child plays outside the better, since the outdoor world offers numerous and varied forms of stimuli for the senses, which can help them learn and grow and become more accustomed to the world around them.

Despite the benefits of outdoor play, the modern child still tends to spend most of their time indoors. The pandemic and lockdowns have further exacerbated this issue. Not only can remaining indoors have a negative impact on their development, but there’s also the very real challenge for parents looking to entertain bored children. As such, the most recent lockdown has led many parents to invest in remote-controlled toys.

Since modern children have grown up with technology, toys like drones, model helicopters, trains, and cars provide a valuable bridge between indoor technological-based entertainment and outdoor, unstructured play by blending children’s desire to interact with technology while still engaging in physical activity. While it might be hard to get a child to just run around the block, it’s far easier to get them to chase after a remote-control car up and down the yard. These toys also add an element of fun for younger children, with many having flashing lights and interesting sounds. And older children are challenged to employ their problem-solving abilities to figure out how to do tricks with these devices.

A further benefit is that these toys allow for other activities too – such as developing building skills, climbing trees, and engaging in imaginative play. Since most remote-control toys can be operated in the backyard, it also means that children can safely play outside while still upholding social distancing and lockdown rules. And let’s not forget that once they’ve expended their excess energy by playing outside, parents are almost guaranteed a more peaceful day!
