Redding Pitt, the one-time Chairman of Alabama's Democratic Party and Chief Federal Prosecutor, passed away on Sunday, February 7, at age 71. —
Pitt was a Decatur native who served as chairman of the state Democratic Party from 2001 to 2005 after working as U.S. attorney in Montgomery for seven years beginning in 1994. President Bill Clinton appointed him to the federal position.
A former Army captain in Vietnam, Pitt received a Bronze Star for service in the infantry and intelligence divisions.
Party chairwoman Nancy Worley says Pitt was currently serving as a vice chairman of the state organization.
One of Mr. Redding's law partners, Ken Riley, Esq., stated "Redding was a loyal friend and law partner. He was loved and respected by everyone at our Firm and will be deeply missed. Redding was an extraordinary person and statesman. The effects of his loss are far reaching and extend beyond the borders of the State of Alabama. Pitt had been with the Birmingham-based law firm of Farris, Riley and Pitt since 2001.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 15th at 12:00 noon at Canterbury United Methodist Church located at 350 Overbrook Road in Birmingham. Graveside service will follow at 3:30pm at Decatur City Cemetery located at 1001 Wilson Street NW in Decatur, Alabama.
