-- Ray “Pinky” Velazquez is marking two decades since the launch of The Perfect Business, a milestone that reflects not only the longevity of a brand but the sustained influence of a career built over more than 45 years in the global dance music industry. While the anniversary offers a moment to reflect, Velazquez is clear that his current focus is firmly on the future through his evolving production platform: Pinky-Pac Productions.
Velazquez’s journey began in the 1970s in New York City, where he established himself as a leading club DJ at the Ipanema discotheque located just 2 blocks away from the famed Studio 54. During this period, he developed a reputation for both musical instinct and technical skill, regularly receiving unreleased records from major and secondary labels through exclusive record pools (A club Disc Jockey service similar to renting a post office box at a post office, but instead of mail, the service exclusively involves vinyl records). He recalls listening to hundreds of tracks each month, evaluating their potential before they reached radio audiences.

“I was hearing records before the world heard them,” Velazquez says. “That gave me the ability to forecast which songs were going to connect and which ones were not. Over time, that fine-tuned my ear to understand what truly makes a hit record.”
This early immersion in the mechanics of dance music laid the foundation for his role as an A&R director for Vanguard and Flip Records in the 1970s and 1980s. There, he worked closely with artists and producers, shaping releases and identifying talent at a critical stage in their careers. Among his early contributions, Velazquez produced Spectrum City’s first two singles, “Lies” and “Check Out The Radio,” after signing the group to Vanguard Records. He notes that the group later evolved and became Public Enemy, one of the most influential acts in hip-hop history. The same is true for the Vanguard Records-signed group Twilight 22, produced by Stevie Wonder friend and protege Gordon Bahary. Ray and Gordon worked together on establishing the group, and Ray was the Executive producer.
The first two singles from the group, “Electric Kingdom” and “Siberian Nights,” were smash releases in the hip-hop category of dance music.
“Seeing that evolution reinforced something important,” he says. “Talent needs the right direction and the right development to reach its full potential.”
Over the decades, Velazquez has remained deeply engaged with the production and the Extended Mix dance version side of the industry, contributing to numerous dance records across genres including disco, house, R&B dance, and dance-oriented rock. He also mentions having the above- and earlier-mentioned Spectrum City track “Check out the Radio” featured in the 1992 Oliver Stone film “South Central” soundtrack as an example of how strong records can extend beyond traditional music platforms way after their initial release.
“My in-depth knowledge and keen insight from over 45 years in the dance music industry shaped how I understand what a hit record truly entails,” Velazquez explains. “That knowledge is what I bring to every artist, producer, and record company I work with today.” My job is to provide wisdom, insight, inspiration, and a path that sets a new or established artist in a direction that sets a tone for utmost success in a competitive global marketplace”.
While The Perfect Business has served as a long-standing foundation, Velazquez is now channeling his expertise into Pinky-Pac Productions, a service-driven model designed to meet the evolving needs of the modern music landscape. The platform focuses on providing studio remixing and additional production for existing dance tracks, transforming them into extended versions that are optimized for global distribution.
“Pinky-Pac Productions is about taking a solid record and elevating it,” he says. “A three-minute track can become an eight-minute experience, with additional melody lines, stronger rhythm structures, and enhanced vocals that increase its marketability and hit potential.”
Velazquez emphasizes that this process goes beyond technical adjustments. It is rooted in a deep understanding of how music connects with audiences. “A lot of people focus on rhythm tracks and basslines,” he says. “Those are important, but they are not enough. Melody and song structure have to sit on top of that foundation to bring the record to a level where it can truly resonate.”

Beyond production, Velazquez has also contributed to education within the music community. He has delivered seminars at colleges and institutions, sharing his knowledge with students seeking to understand the structure and dynamics of the dance music industry. He views this work as an extension of his broader mission to guide the next generation.
“There is a lot of talent out there,” he says. “What is often missing is a clear understanding of what it takes to turn that talent into a finished product that can compete on a global stage.”
As the industry continues to evolve through digital platforms, streaming services, and social media, Velazquez maintains that the core principles of a successful record remain unchanged. “Technology changes how music is delivered,” he says. “It does not change what makes people respond to a song.”
The 20-year milestone of The Perfect Business serves as both a reflection and a transition point. It underscores the consistency of Velazquez’s approach while highlighting his continued relevance in a rapidly shifting landscape. With Pinky-Pac Productions, he is positioning himself to apply decades of experience to the demands of a new era.
Reflecting on his career and the path ahead, Velazquez returns to the fundamentals that have guided him since the beginning. “After all these years, it still comes down to the same thing,” he says. “You have to understand the record, understand the audience, and know how to bring them together in a way that creates something people cannot ignore. Great songs stand the test of time because they touch the human spirit some way, somehow. And to keep that in focus throughout this competitive arena of global dance music production is an essential, paramount ingredient no matter how persuasive that bassline and rhythm track is for the dance floor or the concert.”
