The most sought-after hire among Los Angeles's wealthy families is no longer a nanny or a chef. It's a personal assistant, according to new figures released today by Lexington Staffing, the boutique agency placing vetted domestic staff with families across Southern California and nationwide.
The agency's current placements include private family assistants commanding $45 to $55 an hour plus overtime - part caregiver, part chief of staff for the household - alongside rotational nannies in Los Angeles at $130,000 to $160,000 per year and overnight newborn care specialists in Brentwood at $45 to $65 per hour.
"These are numbers that would have raised eyebrows even five years ago," said Brooke Barousse, CEO and Founder of Lexington Staffing. "The families I work with aren't just hiring childcare anymore. They want one trusted professional who can manage the calendar, the travel, the vendors, and the children - and the people who can genuinely do all of that know exactly what they're worth."
Barousse attributes the surge to post-pandemic demand from dual-career parents, the professionalization of domestic work, and a blurring of roles at the top of the market. The line between nanny and executive assistant, she says, is increasingly porous - and candidates who can cover both are commanding salaries that reflect it.
For aspiring personal assistants, the path is competitive. More than 90% of applicants do not make it through Lexington's review process, which includes extensive background checks and reference verification. Successful candidates can expect multi-year placements with families in Bel Air, Brentwood, and Beverly Hills.
"Twenty years ago, families hired a nanny. Today they're building a household team, and the personal assistant has become the quarterback of that team," Barousse said. "That's where the demand is concentrated right now."
