Papro Wine Cellars and Consulting (www.paprowinecellars.ca/), an award winning company specializing in wine cellar consultation, design, and construction, is weighing in on the trend of connoisseurs pairing tasting rooms with their wine cellars. —
“Wine collectors have long recognized that the conditions which are ideal for storing wine are not ideal for hosting guests,” says Steve Papadimitriou, Owner and Senior Wine Cellar Consultant. “Wine cellars are cooler by necessity. So if homeowners want to have guests sample portions of their collection, they have to either do so in another room within their home, or get creative as we see in this new trend.”
This new trend is seeing homeowners build wine tasting rooms in the same area as their wine cellars. A report in The Wall Street Journal has some couples building additions to their homes to facilitate the pairing. One Florida couple spent $900,000 over 16 months to get their wine cellar/tasting room design built. The final product was a 4,000-square-foot guest room displaying a 7,000-bottle collection. “Homeowners are looking to create an intimate experience when they have guests over just as any restaurant or cafe would,” Papadimitriou continues. “Being able to sit down and enjoy variations of wine in the same area where you can actually view the collection is a unique experience, and one homeowners are increasingly trying to capture.”
The The Wall Street Journal also reports that one couple in California was able to manage a 450 foot tasting room able to seat 14 guests encased by a glass room which shows off pieces of the couple’s art collection in addition to their 3,000-bottle wine collection. The total cost was about $1.0 million.
“The type of people who are collecting wine and making the decision to install tasting rooms understand it’s a luxury,” concludes Papadimitriou. “They have the resources to build these rooms and make considerable investments to create an area that fits precisely with what they’re trying to accomplish. It’s not something everyone can do, but those who can do it want to do it well.”
