-- Oleb Books announces the upcoming launch of a series of affordable PDF guides. The publishing house was founded by author and accessibility advocate Dr. Belo Miguel Cipriani. Belo is a narrative medicine practitioner who received his training from Columbia University CPA program. Designed to help publishing professionals, organisations, and individuals, the guides aim to help make digital platforms, events, and physical spaces more accessible to people with disabilities.

He says the guides will cover practical areas including accessible social media, website design, event planning, and inclusive physical spaces. Each guide will be priced reasonably and will be available for purchase through the Oleb Books website, which is currently undergoing a relaunch. He expects the website and the guides to be live within six to eight weeks.

The guides, according to Cipriani, are a response to a gap he encountered repeatedly in his work as a writer, educator, and consultant. “Many people want to support colleagues, customers, and community members living with disabilities or illness, but they are unsure how to begin,” he says. “Fear of saying the wrong thing, or of making a mistake, can keep people from acting on good intentions.” The guides are intended to replace that uncertainty with practical knowledge that can be applied in workplaces, organisations, and communities.

Cipriani’s own experience shaped that approach. He became blind as an adult in 2007, an experience he recounts in his memoir, Blind: A Memoir, endorsed by author Amy Tan. He was working in Silicon Valley at the time and expected to resume his employment, but the digital systems he relied on were not accessible to him. He says, “That experience showed me the difference between being willing to participate in society and having the tools and environments necessary to do so.” It also led him to focus on accessibility as a career, first as a writer and later as an educator and publisher.

“Many people want to support colleagues, customers, and community members living with disabilities or illness, but they are unsure how to begin,” Cipriani says. “These guides are intended to give them the practical knowledge to act on that intention and become the allies they want to be.”

The upcoming launch reflects Oleb Books’ broader mission of publishing work that explores disability and illness experiences through essays, fiction, poetry, and educational resources. Cipriani has worked as a writer-in-residence, a spokesperson for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and an educator at universities.

Cipriani says the guides are also an attempt to address a deeper problem. He says, “Disability and illness often provoke fear and uncertainty in people who have not encountered them directly. Education is one way to replace that fear with understanding.” The guides are intended as a starting point for learning and improvement rather than a guarantee that an organisation will meet every accessibility requirement. For Cipriani, accessibility is an ongoing responsibility that may require reviewing existing practices and listening to the people affected by barriers.

“New beginnings and endings are part of life,” Cipriani says. “There’s always something after the nothing. I want people to see that it'’s possible to rebuild yourself from a tragedy.”
