The event will be held at the University of the District of Columbia. National Maker Faire will kick off the “Week of Making” from June 12-18, 2015.

President Barack Obama is publicly committed to the Maker Movement. He officially called on every company, college, community and citizen to join up and become builders and doers themselves. President Obama has focused on democratizing the skills and tools that are needed to turn an idea or a vision into reality. President Obama hopes that events like the National Maker Faire will inspire others to think of careers in STEM, advanced manufacturing and design. President Obama is also hopeful that it will be a stepping stone for people to become entrepreneurs.

This year, a “Week of Making” will be celebrated by various federal agencies. Some of the agencies include the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the U.S. Small Businesses Administration, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Corporation for National and Community Service, NASA, the Smithsonian and the Department of Homeland Security.

The goal of National Maker Faire is to attract people from across the country, regardless of age, gender, class or creed, to come together to showcase their ingenuity in creating new solutions to today’s problems. Various examples of best practices will also be announced.

Makers who want to become individual entrepreneurs will be supported at the National Maker Faire and a focus will be on making fabrication and design skills more accessible to the world. A suite of services has been announced by 21 different federal agencies, which want to ensure those with an interest in manufacturing or engineering can be assisted. Some of the services include training, business mentoring and start up grants. The goal is to make sure products can be manufactured domestically according to need.

Bonner is enthusiastic about the opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship within the maker community. “The founders of franchising were makers. Isaac Singer was a maker. He used franchising as a means of distributing his sewing machines. Martha Matilda Harper was a maker. She used business method franchising as a means of distributing her hair and beauty treatments. Other opportunities for makers include partnerships with companies that license their inventions in an open innovation environment. The sky is the limit for maker entrepreneurs,” according to Bonner.
