-- Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke has signed on to star in The Death of Ivan Ilych, a feature adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novella directed by Nicholas Rooney. The project, produced by Theatre of Life Productions, is currently in late development.
Set in late 19th-century Russia, The Death of Ivan Ilych follows a high-ranking judge whose life is shattered when a sudden illness forces him to confront his own mortality. The film traces Ivan’s journey as he moves from denial to acceptance, reexamining the choices that shaped his life and the values he once believed were unshakeable.
Director Nicholas Rooney said Rourke was chosen for his ability to portray characters undergoing profound internal transformation.
“Mickey brings an emotional honesty that is essential for this story,” Rooney said. “Ivan Ilych is a man confronting truths he has avoided his entire life, and Mickey’s experience allows that transformation to resonate authentically on screen.”
Rourke, known for acclaimed performances in The Wrestler, Barfly, and Angel Heart, brings decades of experience in character-driven drama and independent film. His attachment marks a major step forward for the adaptation as it moves toward the next phase of development.
Academy Award–nominated composer John Cameron (Kes, A Touch of Class) is attached to create the film’s score. Casting for key supporting roles is underway through Theatre of Life Productions’ London office. Production design, cinematography, and editing partners will be announced shortly.
Upon completion, The Death of Ivan Ilyich will be submitted to major international film festivals. Distribution plans will be announced at a later stage in coordination with sales and festival partners.
