New nonprofit initiative aims to advance informed consent, patient empowerment, and transparency in mental health care.

-- Attorney and mental health advocate Ellen Lubensky is excited to announce the launch of The Mental Health Choice Project, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to promoting informed consent, patient choice, and transparency in psychiatric care. The organization will officially launch on July 22, Lubensky’s birthday, alongside its inaugural public fundraising campaign.

The Mental Health Choice Project is committed to empowering individuals and families through providing educational resources that support informed decision-making regarding mental health treatment. Through community outreach, advocacy, and collaboration with professionals and organizations, the initiative seeks to foster respectful conversations while promoting patient dignity, autonomy, and access to balanced information. The organization encourages patients to understand the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and uncertainties associated with proposed psychiatric treatment so they can actively participate in decisions about their care. It is designed to increase public understanding of informed consent and patient rights.

“This initiative is about helping people feel empowered to ask questions and make informed decisions about their mental health,” says Lubensky. “Every individual deserves the opportunity to fully understand their options before beginning treatment, and to feel supported in making choices that align with their values.”

A key area of the organization’s educational mission is increasing awareness of psychiatric medication withdrawal and the importance of appropriate medical guidance when medications are initiated, adjusted, or discontinued. The organization also seeks to encourage greater understanding among healthcare providers regarding physical dependence, withdrawal, and the importance of individualized tapering plans when patients choose to reduce or discontinue psychiatric medications under medical supervision.

The organization’s guiding principle is simple: Every mental health patient deserves the opportunity to understand the full scope of their treatment — including benefits, risks, alternatives, and uncertainties — before making healthcare decisions.

The Mental Health Choice Project is in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. While initial donations are not expected to be tax-deductible, Lubensky will also launch a GoFundMe campaign on July 22nd to help support the organization’s early-stage educational efforts. Additional information, including ways to support the organization’s early-stage educational and advocacy efforts.

Additional information, including ways to support the organization, will be available at launch through thementalhealthchoiceproject.org.
