-- The South Carolina law firm of McGowan, Hood & Felder, LLC is now accepting defective drug and failure to warn cases on behalf of clients throughout the state whose children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder after their mothers took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to treat their depression.

“This is one of those extraordinary stories that seems almost too terrible to believe,” said S. Randall Hood, one of the firm’s founding attorneys. “These new studies that have come out and found a link between taking the drug and having a child on the Spectrum – as a parent, my heart hurts for these people. As a defective drug attorney, I feel angry for my clients. They had a right to know that such a link was possible. They had a right to know that there could unintended side effects. They had a right to make the decision about how to proceed. Those rights were taken away from them. So all of us at McGowan, Hood & Felder will be fighting for justice for them, to help those families get the tools and assistance they need to properly care for their children.”

McGowan, Hood & Felder, LLC has long championed the rights of injured clients in South Carolina and throughout the country. The Firm’s mass torts department is widely acknowledged to be one of the most sophisticated in the country, handling complex litigation on behalf of hundred and even thousands of litigants at a time.

About the study

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics looked into the effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on gestation in the second and third trimesters. SSRIs are a form of antidepressants commonly prescribed in the US and in Canada, where the study took place. The researchers found that children whose mothers took SSRIs during the second and/or third trimester of their pregnancy had an 87% greater chance of being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) than those whose mothers did not take the medication. This latest study supports earlier findings in 2011 and 2013 that the popular antidepressant increased chances of a child developing ASD.
