Dr. Steven M. Stanley is a renowned paleontologist recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for his contributions to evolutionary biology and geology.

Steven M. Stanley, PhD, has garnered a laudable reputation as a world-famous paleontologist, contributing richly to the fields of evolutionary biology and geology. He currently works as a research professor at Florida State University and serves as a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Stanley's work has earned him recognition in Marquis Who’s Who, highlighting his contributions to science, literature and education.

Marquis Who's Who is a prestigious registry of notable individuals across various fields. It employs a rigorous evaluation process to recognize professional achievements and societal contributions. The organization celebrates excellence and innovation among those who have significantly impacted their industries.

Dr. Stanley has made notable contributions to paleontology, particularly through his research on the theory of punctuated equilibria. The theory suggests that once a species originates, its population stabilizes and shows little change over time. In geology, Dr. Stanley demonstrated how variations in the magnesium/calcium ratio of seawater influenced the types of organisms that served as major reef builders and producers of lime sediment throughout Earth's history. He also developed a mathematical calculation challenging the conventional belief that 95% of marine species became extinct at the end of the Permian Period, arguing that the figure was closer to 81%.

Dr. Stanley began his academic journey at Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in geology in 1963. He continued his education at Yale University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. His professional career started in 1967 at the University of Rochester and spans more than five decades. He has held significant roles at Johns Hopkins University, where he founded and chaired the part-time evening master’s degree program in environmental science and policy, and at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

Dr. Stanley has contributed to both literature and science. He has written several well-received books, including “Children of the Ice Age” and “The New Evolutionary Timetable,” the latter of which was nominated for an American Book Award. His textbook “Earth System History” is widely used in historical geology, and he co-authored “Principles of Paleontology,” which helped modernize the teaching of paleontology.

In his latest novel, “T. Rex Darwin and Adventures Out West,” Dr. Stanley explores human relationships within the context of scientific discovery. The novel follows a group of college students and their professor as they navigate various experiences, blending elements of drama, tragedy, humor and science. “This book allowed me to combine my scientific knowledge with my interest in fiction, creating a narrative that is both educational and engaging,” Dr. Stanley explains.

Dr. Stanley’s contributions to science and literature have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. He is the only paleontologist in the past three decades to receive the Penrose Medal, the highest award from the Geological Society of America. Dr. Stanley’s accolades also include the Mary Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences, the Twenhofel Medal from the Society for Sedimentary Geology and the Paleontological Society Medal, for which he notably served as president. Additionally, Dr. Stanley was president of the American Geological Institute and served on two boards and one commission of the National Research Council.

Dr. Stanley plans to pursue an emeritus position at Johns Hopkins University, where he intends to continue contributing to the study of life’s history. He remains committed to both science and literature, aiming to educate and inspire future generations through his ongoing research and recent work.
