The Malaysia–Japan ERAB Cybersecurity Conference 2024, hosted by IPv6 Forum Malaysia, concluded successfully at Hotel Maya, Kuala Lumpur. The event attracted international experts and professionals in the fields of energy resource aggregation and cybersecurity from Malaysia and Japan.
The conference, endorsed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), facilitated important discussions on the emerging Energy Resource Aggregation Business (ERAB) and its associated cybersecurity challenges. The event addressed the need for global collaboration and the development of robust security frameworks in response to the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the complex global supply chain involved in ERAB.
Prof. Emeritus Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass, Chairman of IPv6 Forum Malaysia, and Mr Masayuki Furukawa, Director at JICA, inaugurated the event with insights into the importance of international cooperation in the cybersecurity landscape.
Dr. Masaki Umejima, Convener of the Development Plan at IEC System Committee Smart Energy, Japan, provided an overview of global standards and the pressing need for cybersecurity frameworks in ERAB.
The event was graced by the presence of the Guest of Honour, Mr Derek John Fernandez, Commissioner, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Renowned experts, including Prof. Emeritus David Farber from Keio University, Dr. Gopinath Rao Sinniah, CTO of Favoriot Sdn Bhd, and Mr Kaneda Yukako, Director of International Affairs at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, shared their thoughts on various aspects of cybersecurity and ERAB implementation.
The highlight of the event was the Research Presentation chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selvakumar Manickam, Head of Cybersecurity Research Centre, NAv6, USM and co-chaired by Dr Masaki Umejima and Dr Masao Isshiki, Professor and Director, ECHONET Lite Interoperability Test Center, Kanagawa Institute of Technology, Japan. Researchers Mr Ashish Jaisan and Dr Shamsul UL Arfeen from the National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAv6), University Science Malaysia (USM), showcased the latest findings from their ERAB cybersecurity research project.
The event also featured a distinguished panel discussion, where the panellists engaged in an insightful discussion on the intersection of cybersecurity policies and regulations, focusing on the need for strong governance to ensure the security of global energy systems. Furthermore, the session dived into cross-border collaboration and joint initiatives to mitigate risks pertaining to ERAB.
The session was moderated by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass and joined by an esteemed pool of Subject Matter Experts consisting of Mr. Derek J. Fernandez, Commissioner, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC); Mr. Fazlan Bin Abdullah, Head of Technology Research and Strategy, Cybersecurity Malaysia; Dr. Masaki Umejima; Mr. Saravanan Kulanthaivelu, Senior Cyber Forensic Examiner, Standard Chartered Global Business Services Sdn Bhd; Datuk Wira Ir. Md Sidek Bin Ahmad, Chairman, NUR Power Sdn Bhd; and Dr. Hironori Nakata, Director, Smart Appliance & Solution Department, Sharp Corporation and ECHONET Consortium.
The conference emphasized the significance of collaboration across borders to address the cybersecurity challenges posed by the interconnected world of energy resources and IoT devices. Participants left with valuable takeaways and action points to enhance cybersecurity frameworks and ensure the safety of the global energy infrastructure.
All in all, the Malaysia–Japan ERAB Cybersecurity Conference 2024 marked an important milestone in fostering international cooperation and driving the development of secure, resilient energy resource systems.
