After countless failed promises from other projects and manufacturers, the wait is finally over. MAGRIG has created the next generation of Thunderbolt 3 magnetic USB-C adapters that is finally ready for primetime.
"Our daily workflows of creating content need power, data transfer speed and large displays. That's where Thunderbolt 3 technology comes in. Everyday we use Thunderbolt 3 devices— like iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, LG UltraFine 5K display, external eGPU module, Thunderbolt 3 storage, Thunderbolt 3 adapter, and more. After some time, we always get a frayed cable, worn and torn ports, an accidentally dropped laptop and die-by-dropping devices,” says co-founder Jonathan Huang on the inspiration behind the project. “We were trying to find out whether there is a combination of Thunderbolt 3 and MagSafe on this planet. So we tried a bunch of MagSafe-like magnetic adapters but none of them are Thunderbolt 3-enabled, or compatible with Thunderbolt 3 devices which we currently use. Ultimately, we decided to design and craft our own Thunderbolt 3 magnetic adapter.”
Magrig Adapter consists of two parts -- the magnetic USB-C male tip and the magnetic USB-C female adapter -- which is an ideal combination of magnetic connection and Thunderbolt 3. The detachable magnetic tip easily fits virtually any USB-C device. To connect, simply snap the cable with the magnetic adapter to the magnetic receiver tip. It also effortlessly and safely disconnects when the cable is pulled away from the adapter, just like MagSafe. Magrig Adapter offers an elegant magnetic connection with state-of-the-art speed and versatility.
Thunderbolt 3 technology has unmatched speed and power for computers and peripherals making the need to plug and unplug via plain Thunderbolt 3 cables out of step with current workflow needs. "None of the existing magnetic USB-C chargers complied with the USB-C standard, which means they are just produced with an USB-C housing not the mechanism. And the mechanism itself has to be complied by Thunderbolt 3. Basically there is no Thunderbolt 3 magnetic USB-C adapter on the market for the time being. Yet Magrig Adapter is the only one that passed 3 times pilot productions and is now ready for mass production. It is not a prototype that we are pitching on our Kickstarter campaign. It's a final product that has been heavily used for months with zero problems reported,” adds Huang.
