State and Season Home Design and Supply, founded by Lucy Small, is a unique hybrid of everything you might want in a design shop: high-end materials for the entire home, unique décor, and knowledgeable staff. But there’s something different about this interior design showroom – from the inside, you’d think the beautiful aesthetics and luxury brands are right off the main drags of Los Angeles, Miami, or New York. But in reality, this hub for luxury living is located in the small town of Blue Ridge, Georgia (population 1244).
This small town, quaint and charming with its Hallmark movie feel, independent shops, and farm-to-table restaurants, is probably the South’s worst-kept secret. Known as the gateway to the mountains, Blue Ridge is the start of the Appalachian Trail and attracts both cosmopolitan and adventurous travelers. The population in peak season throughout the county, explodes from a few thousand to over 80,000 visitors on any given weekend. It’s no surprise that more and more people are choosing to make this beautiful place their home.
That’s where Lucy Small comes in. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Lucy’s previous work before opening State and Season took her to New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, London, Miami, and other world-class cities. The designer is accredited in Building Design and Construction and has an MBA in Behavioral Economics. So, how did she get here?
“Blue Ridge is the perfect place,” Lucy explains. “It blew up during COVID-19 like so many other small towns around the country, but what keeps people here is that you actually have everything you need: restaurants, shops, good people, and community. The four seasons and beautiful views are a bonus.”
Lucy opened State and Season Home Design and Supply in 2022 after seeing the influx of people moving to the area and building new homes due to the lack of inventory. With a background in experience design, Lucy’s approach to catering to newcomers to the area is first to understand what they’re looking for and help them create their own version of Mountain Living. “Coming up here is different for everyone,” she explains. “Some people want to sit on their porch and never see another human being again. Some people want to be out and about and use their home as just a place to toss their bags. We focus on creating spaces that look great, are unique, and cater to the lifestyles people want to have here.”
Beyond the town's borders, countless trails, picturesque waterfalls, serene lakes, and pristine beaches draw year-round visitors who fall in love with the town. Main Street offers a curated selection of shops, breweries, and restaurants, while the most adventurous among us can get lost in over 300 miles of trails in the surrounding wilderness. History buffs may enjoy riding the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and taking walking tours throughout town.
“This is a special place and the perfect environment to really claim modern mountain luxury,” Lucy explains. And as part of that goal, State and Season has designed several show houses around the county to show off the clean, timeless architectural designs and rustic elements unique to modern mountain living.
“Peaks House is amazing,” Lucy says. “I love how it turned out. The location is so great for people who want to be close to town. It’s totally private with acreage all around, but it’s still on a paved road and a few minutes away from everything.”
That’s Peaks House - named for its three peaks overlooking one of the largest and most private lots remaining in the City of Blue Ridge. Peaks House is an enchanting 2.8-acre escape featuring resort-style living in private modern mountain acreage. The property is just minutes from shopping and dining in downtown Blue Ridge. The sprawling property is listed with Engel & Volkers North Georgia Mountains.
“Everyone who sees it loves it,” Lucy says. “But the biggest compliment to me is when people tell their friends that they have to come see this house!”
State and Season’s passionate team takes great pride in what sets the region apart and strives to equip property owners in the region with functional, aesthetic spaces that reflect the mountains surrounding them. “That’s part of the challenge,” Lucy admits. “The area is quickly growing and changing. Not everyone loves that. We’re trying to create designs that will last a long time and tie back to the region and its roots. We’re not here trying to reinvent the wheel or turn this area into a big city.”
While Peaks House is an amazing escape for those who want to be close to the action, Lucy’s other project, winner of HGTV’s Retreats competition, is one of the first modern homes built in the area. Thinking back on the building process for Blue Mountain Resort House, she shakes her head while recounting the issues with finishing the build during COVID-19. “This house was a labor of love,” she explains. “I think people like my style because it’s a little bit of everything, a good mix, but it’s also unique. And the Blue Mountain house is a perfect example of that.”
Famous for its long-range views directly into the Blue Ridge Mountains over Georgia and into Tennessee and North Carolina, Blue Mountain Resort House is a private retreat set on 28 acres. Highlights include your own ATV and hiking trails, ponds, and U.S. Forest Service access. Anyone looking to escape into the wild will be right at home in this property, which is built like a fortress with everything from gardens to a hydroponic greenhouse, an industrial generator, fiberoptic internet, and other long-term solutions for self-sufficiency in style.
While Lucy’s properties properties seamlessly marry modern convenience with the beauty of nature, modern mountain living in Georgia is more than just aesthetics.
