The great Flood of 2016 was a historic flood that claimed the lives of 13 people and was a multi-billion dollar disaster which Governer Edwards said "that the cost of the 2016 floods was estimated over $8 billion, and that number is expected to rise as the estimates of the damage will continue through the next few months." More than 45,000 homes were affected in some way by the August 2016 floods and over 75 percent of those homes did not have flood insurance because many were outside the 100-year flood plain which was built years ago. Some of the most hit areas were in Denham Springs and Cental which are located about 5 to 10 miles outside of the Baton Rouge Area. It is estimated that 90% of the homes in Denham Springs got water with this great flood. The flood was also considered a statewide disaster and will take 5 to 10 years to rebuild everything back to normal because it expanded at least 20 parishes. The president and the national guard were also called in to help with the recovery.
