Leus Family Foundation has committed further funding to support fencing lessons for local children at Brixton Fencing Club. The initiative is aimed at introducing children from local state schools to the sport of fencing, and then further investing in them as they develop their skills and progress in the sport.
-- TheThe Leus Family Foundation was founded by former European Fencing Champion Dmitry Leus, who also serves as Brixton Fencing’s Honorary President and Patron. The Leus Family Foundation has funded 1,035 sessions from July 2021 to December 2023. The lessons are popular, with average attendance per month growing by 97.5% from late 2021 to late 2023.
In addition to funding lessons, the Leus Family Foundation has also made donations of fencing equipment to the Brixton Fencing Club over the years.
The benefits of fencing include physical activity, mental agility, and character-building opportunities. It is seen as an ideal sport for children, offering both individual challenges and camaraderie that help young people develop resilience, discipline, and confidence.
The children who access the initiatives free lessons benefit from some inspiring company and role models at Brixton Fencing Club. The under-18s of Brixton Fencing
Club have enjoyed some great successes over the past year, including a first place in England for U11, selection to the Great Britain team at the Cadet age group, and gold medals at both the U15 English Youth Championship and British Youth Championship.
Harry Peck, Committee Chair of Brixton Fencing Club, said: “We are very grateful for the continued funding that we have received from the Leus Family Foundation. It’s fantastic to be able to introduce local children to a sport that we are all passionate about and to offer continued support as they build their skills and even compete at national levels.”
Dmitry Leus said: “When we began supporting lessons for children at Brixton Fencing Club in 2018, the aim was to help disadvantaged children build some of the great life skills that fencing supports, from strategic thinking to self-esteem. Of course that remains a goal. But as the programme progresses, we are also aiming to support children through to championship level, building a winning mindset and sporting skills. We always said there were future champions in Brixton and now we are seeing them emerge with support from the Club and the Foundation.”
