-- Communication Consultants, founded by Lee McHatton, is expanding its focus on emotional intelligence education through a planned EI Forum and broader speaking and consulting initiatives designed to bring practical communication and emotional intelligence concepts to larger audiences.
The development represents an expansion of McHatton’s work after 32 years of practicing and working directly with human behavior, communication, and conflict. His work has included communication training for individuals, couples, families, and business organizations, as well as conflict resolution and communication education.
“My objective is to help people develop and practice skills that can enrich their relationships, address communication styles, listen, resolve conflicts, distinguish thoughts from feelings, and manage reactions,” he says.
The planned EI Forum will provide a new platform for McHatton to address emotional intelligence as a practical area of education. The initiative is expected to form part of a broader expansion into speaking, consulting and educational programming, with the aim of making principles developed through years of direct behavioral work accessible to wider audiences.
For McHatton, the need for that education extends across personal and professional settings. He believes there is a recurring gap between understanding communication techniques intellectually and possessing the emotional maturity required to apply those techniques when circumstances become difficult.
“After over 3 decades of working directly with human behavior, I continue to see the same gap,” McHatton says. “People can know what they are supposed to say, yet knowing the words is only part of the work. The deeper question is whether we can manage ourselves well enough to use those skills when we are under pressure, disappointed, afraid, or angry.”
According to him, that perspective is central to the direction of Communication Consultants. McHatton sees emotional intelligence as a practical discipline involving self-awareness, awareness of others, communication, and the ability to respond thoughtfully in situations where emotions can influence behavior.

Communication Consultants currently offers individual consultations, communication workshops, and seminars. The workshops cover subjects including communication styles, listening skills, conflict resolution, taking responsibility for actions, and managing reactive behaviors.
McHatton views his experiences as part of a larger educational question. Communication skills can be taught as techniques, he argues, while emotional intelligence requires people to examine what happens internally before, during, and after difficult interactions.
“Emotional intelligence becomes meaningful when it changes what we do in the moment,” McHatton says. “The real test is what happens when the conversation becomes uncomfortable. That is where awareness, responsibility and emotional maturity have to become practice.”
The planned EI Forum is intended to build on that philosophy while creating a setting for broader discussion and education. McHatton expects the initiative to address emotional intelligence in contexts that include leadership, workplace communication, conflict and relationships. Specific details concerning the forum’s date, location, format and participation will be announced as development progresses.
The expansion also includes speaking and consulting opportunities for organizations seeking education around communication and emotional intelligence. McHatton believes his experience working with individuals and organizations provides the foundation for applying communication principles across different environments while recognizing that interpersonal challenges can vary significantly according to circumstances and relationships.
He is also the author of a book currently in development, which is expected to extend McHatton’s educational work, with publication planned for the spring. The book will complement the broader transition toward education and public speaking while the EI Forum serves as a more immediate development in that expansion.
“I have spent decades working one person, one couple, one family and one situation at a time,” he says. “The next step is to take what those years have taught me and make it available to more people. If emotional intelligence is going to matter in our relationships, our workplaces and our leadership, people need opportunities to understand it, practice it and make it part of how they live.”
Communication Consultants enters this next phase with its established focus on communication and conflict resolution alongside a broader emphasis on emotional intelligence education. For McHatton, the expansion represents an opportunity to move lessons developed through decades of direct experience into larger educational settings while maintaining the practical focus that has shaped his work.
