-- Kiyoshi Hamada, a distinguished electronics company executive, prominently appeared in Forbes's December 2022/January 2023 issue as part of the Northern New Jersey regional edition, selected by Marquis Who’s Who. With more than four decades at Toshiba Corporation and its subsidiaries, Mr. Hamada shaped the company’s growth in Japan and the United States.
Mr. Hamada was crucial in introducing, developing and updating Toshiba's computer systems, as well as supporting the company's expansion into five subsidiaries across the U.S. As vice president of information systems for Toshiba America Consumer Products Inc. in Wayne, New Jersey, Mr. Hamada managed and improved communications and data exchanges among international branches, ensuring smooth global operations.
Reflecting on his approach to leadership, Mr. Hamada says, "The key to success is understanding the true purpose of the job and what is needed. It’s not just about your ideas; you must gather input from others to understand what is necessary."
Mr. Hamada began his career in the Lamp Stamp and Tube Division of Toshiba Corporation in 1957, shortly after earning his Bachelor of Arts in economics from Keio University in Tokyo. His career progressed quickly, and he became a key figure in establishing Toshiba’s presence in the United States. After moving to New York in 1962, Mr. Hamada with his manager opened the first American office, where he served as a liaison and later managed and directed electronic data processing.
Even in retirement, Mr. Hamada remains active and engaged in his New Jersey community. As a trustee of the Sussex County Historical Society, he initiated the creation of a historic site map of Sussex County, now registered in the Library of Congress. He also shares his experiences through his book “KH in Seven Decades,” which chronicles his work and achievements.
Mr. Hamada held memberships in the Association of Information Technology Professionals, the Japan-U.S. Communications Association, the American Management Association, the Society for Information Management, the Data Processing Management Association. Additionally, he is an alumnus of the Institution for Information Studies at the Aspen Institute, and is currently a member of the Vernon Rotary Club of New Jersey.
Reflecting on the legacy he has built and continues to inspire in others, Mr. Hamada emphasizes that "Effective use of computer systems is key to progress."
