James & Jaramillo Lawyers Illuminate the Varied Forms of Domestic Abuse and Violence for Public Awareness and Support

-- Many believe domestic violence only occurs when your partner or spouse physically abuses you. Seemingly, physical abuse is domestic violence, but a wide coverage area is still widely ignored. Domestic violence is not physical abuse but rather a series of progressive abusive behaviors used by one of the partners to gain and maintain power over the other power. It does not matter if it is verbal or physical. It is still domestic violence. Below are some of the different forms of violence.

Physical abuse is the main form of domestic violence among partners. Physical abuse involves slapping, hitting, hair pulling, pinching, shoving, and any abuse causing physical pain. Some people ignore all the minor signs of abuse to save their marriage until they end up in the hospital, missing a hand or with several knife stabs in their body. Women in marriage are the most prone to physical abuse. Before things get out of hand, it is best to talk it out with a domestic violence lawyer to help you acquire a divorce or sue your partner for domestic violence. Physical abuse leaves you justifiably fearful for your safety and completely powerless.

Did you know that some partners work tooth and nail to turn their kids against their mother and father by feeding them lies and damaging information about the other partner? According to the law, this is considered emotional or psychological abuse. The most common form of emotional abuse is undermining one’s sense of self-worth by name-calling, blame-shifting, diminishing one’s abilities, gaslighting, and constant negative criticism. Emotional abuse is aimed at frightening, threatening, and isolating you. Unlike physical and sexual abuse, emotional abuse is characterized by the words and actions of a person.

Regardless of how technological advancements have positively impacted the modern world, they also pose a risk of technological abuse. Generally, technological abuse is the use of technology to stalk, coerce, and harass others. Technological abuse involves making threatening calls, sending abusive texts, stalking and spying on someone using spyware or tracking systems, and sending intimate photos without consent. Technological abuse may not be that common in homes. Still, some unsecured partners abuse their partners to send their live locations, check their text messages, internet, and social media activities, forbidding them from having a technological device and limiting the people they can contact. By doing this, they restrict contact between you and your family and friends, making it hard to leave the relationship.

Most of these forms of domestic violence are connected. They might happen to someone simultaneously, where one leads to the other. To avoid acts of domestic violence, it is essential for couples to regularly have couple counseling to help settle their differences and communicate effectively.
