IOI Corporation Berhad (IOI) hosted the inaugural roundtable panel discussion with the CEO Action Network (CAN) for Workstream 1 (Waste and Circularity). The event, held on 6 November 2024, focused on Malaysia’s policy landscape for advancing sustainable waste management and promoting circular economy practices. Themed ‘Biomass, Plastic & Packaging’, the discussion brought together over 45 physical and online participants, including leading industry experts, policymakers and advocates. The session aimed to foster collaborations towards a more resilient and low-waste future for Malaysia.
The roundtable featured valuable perspectives from our event partners, Nestlé (M) Berhad and Tetra Pak (M) Sdn Bhd, alongside panelists from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Petaling Jaya City Council, Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, Nextgreen Global Bhd and Nestlé. Discussions centered on strategies to align corporate and government efforts for circularity, while also balancing environmental responsibility.
During the event, IOI presented our 7Rs framework (Rethink, Repurpose, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, and Recover) which underpins our integrated approach to waste management and circularity. The first panel session provided insights into biomass applications, exploring its challenges and potential to support a sustainable economy. While the second session highlighted innovative circular packaging, recyclable packaging designs and collaborative recycling initiatives. These successful examples demonstrate tangible applications of the circular economy and offer actionable models for both the government and other businesses to adopt.
