-- Innovative Connections, an organizational development and leadership consulting firm, has announced a free webinar titled “The Conversations We’re Not Having: Navigating Sociopolitical Tension in the Workplace” that will be held on August 25 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time through Zoom. The webinar will provide leaders and employees with the tools they need to navigate sociopolitical tensions affecting the workplace.

Innovative Connections works with organizations and leaders to understand their challenges and coach them through solutions to support them and their teams. Through this coaching, the Innovative Connections team has observed that many leaders and employees are struggling to perform to the best of their abilities amidst the tension and controversy of the current political environment.

While discussions about politics are typically discouraged in the workplace, Innovative Connections believes that leaders and team members should be taught how to discuss the impact of social and political issues at work in productive, healthy ways.

“There is no question that our current political environment is polarizing and controversial,” said Dr. Laurie Cure, founder and CEO of Innovative Connections. “Yet, the workplace, the one location where we spend nearly 40% of our time, is off limits for the conversations around issues that impact us most. The reality of what people are feeling already exists on your team and in the office and the silence around these topics speaks volumes”

“The Conversations We’re Not Having: Navigating Sociopolitical Tension in the Workplace” will be held by Stacey Brandon, a seasoned facilitator of restorative justice and a consultant with Innovative Connections, and CEO Laurie Cure, an organizational psychologist, who will help participants learn how to:

  • Recognize when sociopolitical tension is impacting their team
  • Proactively support their team members in having the right conversation
  • Respond without escalating, shutting down, or avoiding
  • Create psychological safety without forcing agreement
  • Navigate “edge moments” (e.g., comments, conflict, silence)
  • Set clear, appropriate boundaries as leaders
  • Know when to open space—and when not to

“The goal isn't to get everyone on the same page in terms of their belief. We are not debating political issues in the workplace,” said Dr. Cure. “It's really to help people function side by side in the most effective way possible when these issues impact them deeply and personally.”

The Innovative Connections team looks forward to connecting with professionals seeking to further explore this topic. The webinar is free of charge and open to all.
