How John Macatangay, Entrepreneur and Hopportunities Founder, Helped Turn a Simple Idea into a Signature Charity Event for Children and Families

John Macatangay demonstrates that entrepreneurship is not just about the bottom line, but also about the community served by the business being just as important, if not more so.

-- Through the leadership and entrepreneurial vision of John Macatangay, founder of Hopportunities, the Cornhole for the Kids tournament has, over the course of three years, raised thousands of dollars to support the Achievement Centers for Children & Families (ACCF) and its mission to empower more than 700 local children and families.

The first annual Cornhole for the Kids event took place on January 29, 2022, when ACCF and John Macatangay teamed up to host a lighthearted cornhole tournament with a serious purpose: helping combat food insecurity for families served by the organization. Macatangay, a longtime supporter of local charities, provided not only the venue but also the cornhole equipment, event planning, and promotional efforts to bring the community together around the cause.

“Hopportunities does so much for local children in the community, so when we approached owner John Macatangay with the idea of a cornhole fundraiser, he was excited to partner with us,” said Jessica Hall, ACCF Chief Development Officer. “Hopportunities is a great venue, and John’s passion for philanthropy made it a perfect fit.”

The idea began when Hall and Macatangay met at a community event. Hall knew that Hopportunities hosted cornhole tournaments, and that John was a big supporter of the local community (he had recently held a gingerbread house-making contest with proceeds benefiting ACCF).

From that first event, which raised thousands of dollars to provide meals for families in need, Cornhole for the Kids became an annually recurring fundraising event on ACCF’s calendar. In 2023 and 2024, Macatangay expanded the event’s scope, adding live entertainment, raffles, food trucks, and creative new fundraising initiatives that amplified its impact. The 2nd Annual Cornhole for the Kids was held on February 25, 2023 and raised approximately $6,500 — nearly doubling the amount raised in the first annual event.

Beyond logistics, Macatangay’s entrepreneurial approach to community building transformed the tournament into a multi-dimensional charity experience. For the 3rd Annual Cornhole for the Kids event, held on February 3, 2024, John organized silent auctions, designated proceeds from specific beer taps to benefit ACCF, and developed a sponsorship program that allowed local businesses to contribute financially in exchange for marketing exposure at the event and across Hopportunities’ social media channels.

“Each year, we try to add something new to make the event even more fun and impactful,” said John Macatangay. “The goal isn’t just to raise money — it’s to raise awareness, to connect people, and to show how local businesses can play a real role in helping families right here in Delray Beach.”

The results speak for themselves. Over its first three years, Cornhole for the Kids has raised thousands of dollars to support ACCF’s Early Learning, After School, Teen, and Summer Camp programs — initiatives that prepare children for academic success and provide essential resources for working families.

“John plays a crucial role as an outstanding community partner to so many nonprofit organizations in Delray Beach,” said Kerry Filippone, ACCF Community Impact Manager. “His commitment and creativity to our fundraising efforts influences the well-being of the children and families we support. John has helped make Cornhole for the Kids a truly special event. He brings people together in a way that not only raises funds but also builds community spirit.”

From coordinating local vendors to rallying sponsors and personally donating portions of beer sales, Macatangay’s leadership exemplifies how business owners can drive meaningful change in their communities.

“Every year, we see new faces — families, teams, and sponsors — coming together for a good cause,” Macatangay added. “It’s proof that when businesses and nonprofits collaborate, great things happen.”

Through his ongoing partnership with ACCF, John Macatangay has not only helped raise vital funds but has also inspired a model for community engagement that merges entrepreneurship with compassion. The Cornhole for the Kids event stands as a testament to how one person’s vision — and one community’s support — can create lasting impact for children and families across Delray Beach.
