-- Hong Kong and Macao math teams emerged victorious in the International Mathematics Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA 2023) held in Singapore on March 24–25. The event welcomed participants from 11 countries and regions, including Indonesia, India, South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao, Thailand, Bulgaria, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
The five teams, four from Hong Kong and one from Hong Kong-Macao, dominated every team challenge, winning three champions, one first runner-up, and one second runner-up finishes. This marked Hong Kong's first triumph in this global math challenge. Notably, one of the winning teams was a joint Hong Kong-Macao team. All 16 of the Hong Kong and Macau representatives received individual awards totaling 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Kong Pak Him (Kau Yan School), Sit Wai Lam (HKUGA Primary School), Edelweiss Sim Lui Yee (St. Rose of Lima's College), and Woo Ho Chun Jeff (Ying Wa Primary School) won first place in Grades 1, 2, 5, and 6, respectively, while Kei Ieng Iam (Keang Peng School) from Macau took first place in Grade 4.
Dr. Leo, K.H. Lee, the head coach of the Hong Kong and Macao team, expressed his pride and admiration for the team's achievements. He noted that the representatives from Hong Kong and Macao broke their own record by winning a total of 26 prizes, including 10 individual and team champions and 9 gold medals for individuals. He further highlighted the enormous accomplishment of the teams and hoped that more young people would be motivated to seek excellence in mathematics.
Woo Ho Chun Jeff (Ying Wa Primary School, Hong Kong Team Representative), the champion of individual contest in Grade 6 and the champion member of team contest in the category of Grade 3-6, expressed his gratitude to his parents, teammates, and Dr. Lee, his head coach of Hong Kong and Macao Team. He noted that the three-day journey to Singapore was worth it for the award, and he hoped to participate in the competition again in the future.
Jarvis Chan (Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division, Hong Kong Team Representative), the Gold Awardee of individual contest in Grade 1 and the champion member of team contest in the category of junior grades, expressed his joy and appreciation for the opportunity to compete on behalf of Hong Kong. He noted that this was his first time traveling overseas, and he gained valuable friendships and experiences.
Ho Tsz Hang Sky (S.K.H. Mung Yan Primary School, Hong Kong Team Representative), the Gold Awardee of individual contest in Grade 6 and the 1st runner up team member of team contest in the category of Grade 3-6, expressed his delight at participating in the competition in Singapore. He expressed his surprise and gratitude upon receiving the gold medal and hoped to participate in the contest again in the future.
Deng U Hei (Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima, Macao Team Representative), the Silver Awardee of individual contest in Grade 5 and the champion member of team contest in Grade 3-6, expressed his pride and appreciation for the award from the math competition. He noted that he learned a lot from the competition and thanked everyone involved.
Overall, the triumph of Hong Kong and Macao math teams in the IMOYA 2023 is a significant achievement and a testament to their hard work, dedication, and talent in mathematics. Their success is an inspiration to young people everywhere, encouraging them to pursue excellence in STEM fields.
