Each of his designs is unique, and each is based on the specific needs and preferences of the customer. Drake considers elements such as available space, function, materials and finishes on the piece in his designs.
The process of creating a customized piece begins with an idea from the customer. Drake can work from an image found online or in print. He creates a CAD of the piece and creates a design model before acquiring the wood or leather, as well as any hardware which may be part of the finished unit. The customer is involved at each stage of the design process. Once the basic elements are identified and approved, Drake moves on to the next stage of building
In a recent interview, Drake explained, "Once I have the piece modeled and you have given me the approval to build, I will start sourcing the wood, materials, and other elements of the design. This is also where I will give you a final cost. After I have started building, I will continue to seek your input. Remember, I am building your idea. I expect you to be involved in the design process. I will send you pictures throughout the build."
“Functional beauty" he continues, "is another element which I include in my designs and finished products. To me, the pinnacle of functional beauty is to serve the purpose for which it was designed, do it well, and not do anything else. Whether I design a piece of furniture, a toolbox or a garden trellis, I keep it simple. Simple is beautiful."
