-- Grace Episcopal Church, a historic cornerstone of Madison’s Capitol Square since 1855, has launched a major restoration project to replace its iconic slate roof. This will preserve the church’s Gothic Revival architecture and ensure its structural integrity for generations to come.

Recent assessments, including drone-based infrared imaging, revealed significant deterioration of the original roof, prompting the need for a complete replacement. The new slate roof is designed to last 80 to 100 years, protecting the historic structure and its treasured stained-glass windows from weather and time.

Construction is set to begin on June 2, 2025, following initial site preparations that started on May 19. The project team includes Bachmann Construction as the general contractor and Kulp’s of Stratford as the slate roofing subcontractor. Oversight is being led by Grace parishioner and structural engineer Fred Groth, whose experience includes restoration work on the Wisconsin State Capitol and the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Memorial Union.

“This roof replacement is more than a structural necessity; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to preserving a sacred space that has served Madison for over 170 years,” said The Rev. Dr. D. Jonathan Grieser, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church. “We are grateful for the expertise and dedication of our team and the support of our community.”

The project’s total estimated cost is $1.5 million. This includes the roof replacement and the restoration of the church’s beloved courtyard and gardens upon project completion. Generous contributions—from Grace members past and present, the Nimick Forbesway Foundation, and the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation—have funded the initial phases of work, including pre-construction and the purchase of slate. However, additional support from the broader community will be needed to complete the project and ensure the long-term preservation of this landmark.
