GAL Power Systems (www.galpower.com), recognized as one of the leading power generator and temperature control companies in Canada, is featured in an article discussing the importance of being prepared and remediation equipment needs for effective property remediation in the April edition of Canadian Rental Services magazine. —
Mario Muscat, GAL Power's regional vice-president – GTA and SW Ontario, spoke specifically about equipment used for responding to water damages in an article about the 2013 flooding in Calgary. Muscat emphasized the need for "big pumps, small portable generators, water extractors, and specialized diving equipment," but also noted that "it's got to be the right product." "The biggest thing is getting rid of the water and having things like big pumps and emergency lighting," he said, regarding remediation priorities. Speed is additionally important, as "there's a real opportunity to mitigate cost by getting in there quickly."
Rental companies are poised to best meet remediation needs, since few people are willing to outright purchase equipment that would be rarely employed after the fact. However, Muscat cautions that rental providers "have got to understand the...customer and the pressure they're under...often, they're working for two bosses, the insurance company and the business or home owner."
Muscat echoes Ken Robinson, the current chair of the Restoration Contractors Association of Canada (RCOC), on the need for deeper knowledge of remediation in their industry: "The knowledge base is so scarce, a lot of people learn on the fly."
The two recommended that rental providers learn more by consulting the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which runs numerous training programs on remediation techniques and equipment. The IICRC is also capable of offering certification to companies interested in offering their own restoration services.
