Participated by over 80 cyclists, the INEX Club hosted its 2024 INEX Charity Ride last May 18th, 2024, under the sunny skies of Limassol, Cyprus. Cyclists journeyed through 300 km and 150 km races and passed through scenic locations such as Agros, Larnaca, Protaras, and Ayia Napa.
The event drew support from sponsors, including Igor Makarov, a Cyprus national, philanthropist, and former professional cyclist. Makarov and other generous contributors provided funds to equip the Cypriot Cycling Federation's athletes with high-quality bicycles and essential gear, empowering them to reach their full potential.
Reflecting on the event's significance, Makarov stated, "I extend my gratitude to the organizers and the President of the Cyprus Cycling Federation for their commitment to the development of cycling in Cyprus. As a former professional cyclist and member of the UCI Management Committee, I am happy to support causes close to my heart.”
Makarov noted that the dedication of national federations and organizations like INEX Club demonstrates that the future of cycling is in capable hands. He is confident that by working together, comprehensive training and opportunities can be provided to build a vibrant cycling community in Cyprus and beyond.
Makarov mentions, “With sustained support and strategic investments, these young athletes can cultivate their talents, realize their aspirations, and become role models for the next generation of cyclists.”
Having lived in Cyprus for over three decades, Makarov has witnessed firsthand the positive growth of cycling culture and safety in the country. He views his participation and sponsorship of events like the 2024 INEX Charity Ride as the foundation for more strategic partnerships to advance cycling in the country.
The INEX Charity Ride is just one example of Makarov's long-standing commitment to supporting the development of cycling. In addition to his work with the UCI Management Committee, he has donated substantial funds from his businesses to various charitable projects focused on promoting cycling globally.
Makarov's support for cycling was reported to extend to sponsoring Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) federations and local charity rides such as "Tour de Broward" and "The Hublot Best Buddies Challenge: Miami." Moreover, he founded and for many years was the only sponsor of the Swiss-registered professional multinational cycling team Katusha Team, which competed at the highest level from 2009 to 2019.
