Imagine standing in the middle of a bustling street, and someone approaches with a rack of clothes, inviting people to trade outfits on the spot. It sounds wild, but it’s exactly how CLOSWAP, the UK’s #1 peer-to-peer swapping app, started its journey.
This Gen Z-powered startup, founded by three students, has taken its mission of refreshing wardrobes and saving resources nationwide. As unconventional as it sounds, it is reshaping the way Britain thinks about clothes.
Hailed as the “Tinder for Clothes,” the app allows users to swipe, match, and swap fashion pieces peer-to-peer. What began as a university experiment—an impromptu event where hundreds of students swapped clothes—has evolved into a nationwide movement.
The original event was so well received that the three students, who couldn’t afford to keep upgrading their wardrobes themselves, decided to turn it into a business. CLOSWAP has since grown to over 20,000 swappers, with plans for national expansion.
“The goal is to match the pace, price, and practicality of fast fashion through swapping,” says co-founder Maria Remy.
“This is why the app was built and why events are hosted. The experience is fast, engaging, and free, with the added bonus of building an in-person community. For students and young people across the UK, it’s not just about fashion—it’s about giving everyone the opportunity to constantly upgrade their wardrobe without spending money. The currency is already in their closets.”
CLOSWAP is expanding to Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, and beyond, with plans for events in up to five major cities, including Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Birmingham. Alongside these in-person swaps (complete with live music and quirky side activities), the app has gamified the experience with Karma Points, incentivizing users to make swapping more engaging and impactful.
The average Brit wears an item only seven times before discarding it. CLOSWAP aims to change that, giving clothes a second (and third) life by connecting wardrobes across the UK. From free fashion at users' fingertips to creating a circular wardrobe, the app is proving that looking good doesn’t require spending big.
After winning the 2024 Mayor of London’s Entrepreneurship Award for Creative Industries, CLOSWAP cemented itself as a leader in circular fashion. Now, as a Resolution Fellow and part of multiple startup accelerators, the team is ready to make swapping the number one way to refresh wardrobes in the UK, while raising its seed round under the SEIS advanced assurance.
