The series reflects Waite’s long-standing commitment to leadership, personal development, and community impact, offering foundational lessons designed to guide early character formation.
Waite’s life has been defined by leadership across environments that could not be more different. From the playing field to incarceration and into community service, his journey reflects a consistent pattern of responsibility, resilience, and purpose shaped through experience.
“I have been pushed to the front of leadership positions my entire life,” Waite says. “Even when I was in prison, that expectation never left me.”
Growing up in Warren, Ohio, Waite became a quarterback in pee-wee football and carried that role throughout his athletic career. He also served as captain across football, baseball, and basketball, developing an early foundation in discipline and accountability. His athletic ability earned him a full scholarship to the University of South Carolina, where he joined the football program.
During his time at the university, Waite received an unexpected call from the head basketball coach, who had reviewed his high school performance and invited him to try out for the team. “I told him I thought he had the wrong person because I was there on a football scholarship,” Waite recalls. “He said, ‘This is Clayton Waite, correct?’ When I said yes, he told me, ‘Then I have the right person.’” With approval from the football program, Waite went on to compete in both sports, an experience he describes as both humbling and defining.
Following a transfer to Kent State University, Waite continued his athletic career and later pursued opportunities in professional football, including tryouts with teams in the Canadian Football League. His trajectory shifted following a personal tragedy that led to his incarceration and a 16-year-to-life sentence.
During his time in prison, Waite pursued higher education through the Cornell Prison Education Program, earning both an associate and a bachelor’s degree. “That was where I began to rebuild structure in my life,” he says. “It gave me something to hold on to that no one could take from me.”
He also developed a detailed artistic practice using scratch art, creating intricate pieces with tools fashioned from paper clips. “I could not have sharp tools, so I made what I needed,” Waite explains. “With that, I created something meaningful.” His artwork became both a creative outlet and a source of income during his incarceration.
Waite credits this period with shaping the philosophy that underpins both his work and his writing. “No matter what life throws at you, it is so important to be resilient and steadfast and sincere in all that you do,” he says.
After serving 20 years, Waite returned home in April 2020 and committed himself to community service, particularly in homeless outreach. His work focuses on supporting individuals facing instability while encouraging personal accountability and growth. “My mission has been to help save a life by doing the work I do,” he says. “That is what drives me every day.”
The newly announced children’s book series reflects these lived experiences and values. Designed for early readers, the eight-book collection introduces themes of honesty, resilience, empathy, and responsibility through accessible storytelling. Waite emphasizes that the series is intended to provide children with a moral foundation that can guide decision-making throughout life.
“Each one teach one,” Waite says. “If you have knowledge, if you have experience, you have a responsibility to pass it forward.”
Through this series, Waite extends his impact beyond direct service, offering tools for families and educators to engage young children in conversations about ethics and character. The books represent a continuation of his broader mission to create meaningful change at the individual level.
