-- Centering on the Medicine Horse is expanding its equine-based personal development programs while progressing with renovations to its 8,000‑square‑foot facility. The nonprofit organization, led by equestrian professional Trish McEver, provides structured experiential learning programs designed to foster communication, self-confidence, emotional awareness, and problem-solving skills for children and adults.
McEver, who brings over 30 years of equestrian industry experience, established the nonprofit organization to broaden public access to equine-assisted personal development. Her background originates primarily within competitive equestrian disciplines, specifically hunter-jumper and dressage.
With more than three decades of professional instruction and horse management, McEver has observed recurring connections between the emotional responses of horses and the behaviors, communication patterns, and emotional awareness of human participants. These recurring observations shaped the organization’s foundational approach of utilizing interactions with horses as a primary medium for developing practical life skills.
The active structural renovation of the 8,000-square-foot facility represents a key operational milestone in expanding the organization's overall capacity. Once the capital goals are met and construction is completed, the facility will provide dedicated, year-round indoor spaces allowing the organization to accommodate larger community groups, expand scheduled programming, and serve more members of the local population.
"This is about creating something that can reach more people," says McEver. "We've been doing this work for many years, and moving into the nonprofit model allowed us to make the services available to people who may not otherwise be able to afford them."

Centering on the Medicine Horse delivers age-specific curricula tailored to diverse participant needs. Programs structured for children focus on foundational life skills, including self-esteem enhancement, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal communication. Programming tailored for adult participants explores complex areas such as behavioral patterns, decision-making frameworks, personal awareness, and relational dynamics. According to McEver, horses offer an immediate reflection of a participant's emotional state and reactions, creating opportunities for individuals to recognize personal behavioral patterns in real time.
Beyond physical infrastructure upgrades, Centering on the Medicine Horse is preparing for its next major project: establishing a digital educational program to extend its curriculum beyond the local region. McEver has finalized the core curriculum and instructional materials, but additional resources and funding are required to construct the accessible digital platform. Consequently, current fundraising efforts focus on two primary objectives: completing the facility renovation and building the technological infrastructure needed for digital educational expansion.
Through these dual initiatives, Centering on the Medicine Horse is advancing a mission that spans over three decades, evolving from a standard equestrian career into an organization dedicated to making human-horse experiential learning widely accessible. "Horses hold up a mirror to our inner state without judgment," McEver remarks. "When we learn to read their reactions and regulate our own emotions, we unlock a level of self-awareness and practical confidence that transfers directly into every human relationship and life challenge."
