The San Francisco Bay Area business community is invited to celebrate the power of Women and Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by attending the February 11th National Association of Women Business Owners, San Francisco Chapter meeting (NAWBO-SFBA). The event will be held at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance.
Sponsored by Bank of America, the evening will feature an inspiring panel of STEM women including MJ Marggraff, creator of ‘Space Games’ – 0G3D STEM experiments for the International Space Station, Sam De Brouwer, Co-Founder, Scanadu medical device company, Kimberly Bryant, Founder and Executive Director, Black Girls CODE and Danielle Feinberg, Director of Photography at Pixar Animated Studios. This will be followed by a ceremony celebrating local high school girls interested in STEM careers.
“It’s exciting to support the changing landscape for girls and women who want to be leaders in their industry,” says Emily Wirowek, President of NAWBO-SFBA. “This organization is dedicated to creating opportunities for female leaders of the future.” One honoree, high school freshman, Ashley Horzewski, is excited to explore new discoveries in marine biology such as shark skin inspired anti-bacterial surfaces. “There is so much more to learn from the ocean that will benefit life on land,” Ashley says, her passion reflected in the family fish tank.
As a national priority, the Administration rewards companies for inspiring and engaging girls in STEM through the President’s $4.35 billion Race to the Top program. Bay Area corporations in the STEM fields, universities and advocacy groups are eager to address the broad gaps in STEM by supporting Girls in STEM. The huge gap in available talent for open positions – particularly in the Bay Area – makes interesting girls in the sciences more important than ever before. Join NAWBO-SFBA to on February 11th at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, 450 Powell St., San Francisco starting at 5:30 P.M..
