Fujifilm to Invest Additional $1.2 Billion to Expand its Large-Scale Cell Culture CDMO Business in North Carolina
FUJIFILM Corporation today announced an investment of $1.2 billion in its Large-Scale Cell Culture CDMO*1 Business to further expand the planned FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies end-to-end bio-manufacturing facility in Holly Springs, North Carolina, bringing the total investment in the facility to over $3.2 billion. The expansion adds significant large-scale production capacity to FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies’ global network through its United States and Europe manufacturing hubs. The investment will generate an additional 680 jobs by 2031, also bringing the total number of new, highly skilled local jobs to 1400 in Holly Springs. The new investment in FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies’ large-scale cell culture facility in Holly Springs will add 8 x 20,000 liters (L) mammalian cell culture bioreactors by 2028, to the already planned 8 x 20,000 L for bulk drug substance as part of the initial investment . This new facility allows for flexibility to expand with additional bioreactors to accommodate new projects to meet the emerging needs of partners, and upon completion will make the site one of the largest cell culture biopharmaceutical CDMO facilities in North America. Fujifilm Launches "SYNAPSE Creative Space" Service in Japan

FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) announces that it will launch the "SYNAPSE Creative Space," a service to support the development of AI technologies for image diagnosis at medical institutions and research organizations in Japan, starting April 12. The "SYNAPSE Creative Space" is a cloud service that enables doctors and researchers to develop their own AI technologies to support image diagnosis. It does not require any special knowledge such as programming*1. The service is based on an AI technology development research platform system jointly developed by Fujifilm and the National Cancer Center Japan. There are three major hurdles to developing AI technology to support image diagnosis: first, it requires a high-performance server and development environment; second, it requires advanced engineering skills such as programming to design the learning model and execute the development process; and third, it requires many hours and effort to annotate or generate data for the AI to learn. In particular, the annotation process requires several minutes to an hour per case, and the work must be performed on hundreds or thousands of datasets, making it a major burden in the AI technology development process. The "SYNAPSE Creative Space" is a service that enables a series of development processes, such as project management, annotation, learning, and AI technology testing, in the development of AI technology to support image diagnosis to be performed all at once in the cloud. Since the development environment is ready on the cloud, it can be easily used by simply preparing a PC at hand. In addition, since multiple learning models for medical images developed jointly by Fujifilm and the National Cancer Center Japan can be used, doctors and researchers can develop AI technology without having to design their own learning models from scratch. Furthermore, the annotation tool for this service has a screen design similar to that of Fujifilm’s AI platform available in Japan and used in clinical settings, allowing efficient and intuitive reference and annotation of images with a feel similar to that of the diagnostic imaging environment. The "SYNAPSE Creative Space" has evolved to be even easier to use, including enhanced annotation support features that reflect requests received during trials conducted at more than 40 medical and research institutions in Japan since April 2022. It strongly supports the development of AI technology to support image diagnosis. It can also be used not only as a support tool for research and development, but also as a teaching tool for hands-on education of medical professionals and medical students. It allows students to experience a part of AI technology development without engineering knowledge, thus helping them understand the basic principles and mechanisms of AI technology, which is increasingly used in clinical settings, and enhancing AI literacy. It is expected that the widespread use of the "SYNAPSE Creative Space" will promote the development of AI technologies to support image diagnosis for various diseases, including rare diseases. Fujifilm has already conducted joint research with the National Cancer Center Japan and Nagoya City University to develop two AI technologies*2. Fujifilm Launches New Water-Based Digital Inkjet Press Targeting for Flexible Packaging Printing Market
FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) announces the launch of the Jet Press FP790, a new water-based digital inkjet press for the flexible packaging printing market. The Jet Press FP790, a new addition to the inkjet digital presses of the Jet Press series, offers customers in the flexible packaging industry high productivity and versatility. With the Jet Press FP790, customers can efficiently produce a wide variety of packaging, including food and household products, even in small volume orders. This is the first time Fujifilm has introduced a water-based digital inkjet press for flexible packaging. The product supports customers’ high productivity with a maximum substrate width of 790mm and a print speed of 50 m/min. In addition to print heads for each CMYK*1 color, two white ink channels are equipped to improve the density of white. For the color printing, the based color greatly affects the appearance of the package. Through the density of white with two white ink channels, the product realizes the vibrant colors on the film substrates*2. Furthermore, by applying the processing liquid before printing, the ink has high adhesion to the water-repellent film substrates. In addition, the product enables high resolution printing with the 1200 dpi X 1200 dpi print head. Jet Press FP790 Flexible packaging printing commonly uses analog printing methods such as flexographic printing*3 and gravure printing*4. These methods require the creation of design pattern plates for mass printing with the same design. Digital printing, including inkjet printing, does not need for printing plates. Customers can directly send their design data to the printing press for printing. It enables the small‐volume production of a wide variety of products and flexible response to customer needs. In 2011, Fujifilm launched its digital inkjet press, the Jet Press 720 (currently upgraded to the Jet Press 750S), to the global commercial printing market ahead of its competitors. The Jet Press series has been highly acclaimed for its high image quality that surpasses the offset printing, and the cumulative number of installed products is more than 300 in the world.
