-- The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) awarded its prestigious Conservation Leadership Award to Bumitama for its conservation program at the RSPO Excellence Awards ceremony held at the Hotel Mulia Jakarta.
This award recognizes Bumitama for going beyond the RSPO Principles and Criteria requirements in managing environmental and social impacts. Bumitama also demonstrated outstanding efforts in conserving, protecting and enhancing High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, High Carbon Stock (HCS) forests, as well as rare, threatened and endangered (RTE) species. The award was received by Martin Mach, Bumitama's Head of Environmental Protection & Governance during the awards gala dinner event on 20 November 2023.
The RSPO Excellence Awards celebrate members around the world actively seeking solutions to address current industry challenges and scale up the sustainable palm oil value chain. Winners like Bumitama drive real impact, meet stringent standards, and lead the way in making palm oil sustainable.
Bumitama is dedicated across operations to managing over 40,000 hectares of conservation area. Its commitment to the protection, restoration and/or joint management of High Carbon Stock (“HCS”) forests, peatlands and other areas identified as High Conservation Value (“HCV”) is in accordance with RSPO Principles & Criteria and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
One of Bumitama’s conservation flagship programmes is located in West Kalimantan, called the Bumitama Biodiversity and Community Project (BBCP). It is a collaborative conservation program covering about 8,000 hectares of landscape that provides a migration corridor for key species, such as orangutan, that connects their habitat in Sungai Putri Peat Swamp Forest with Gunung Tarak and Gunung Palung National Park.
Launched in 2016 by Bumitama and partners, the BBCP has several goals: protecting and sustaining biodiversity and forests; engaging participation of local communities; and helping communities improve productivity and income to reduce deforestation pressures.
Key activities of the BBCP include ecosystem and biodiversity monitoring, forest rehabilitation and reforestation, establishing agroforestry partnerships and alternative livelihoods for communities, and coordinating multi-stakeholder conservation efforts.
As one of Indonesia's largest palm oil producers, Bumitama will continue leading efforts to transform the industry towards meeting the highest environmental and social standards. Driven by a vision for sustainable development, Bumitama aims to create long-term value for its shareholders while also conserving precious ecosystems and improving the livelihoods
