consumer protection trial attorney, discusses the stigma surrounding whiplash injuries and how not taking the injury seriously could have debilitating life-long consequences in Brain Injury & Whiplash Often Overlooked, a new video on askmikeburg.com, a website that helps people with everyday legal issues. The videos on the site have attracted more than 50,000 views.
The cliched cartoon of a guy who was in a fender bender wearing a neck brace and crying whiplash may not be so funny after all. Though whiplash is a colloquialism and a non-medical term, it can be a very serious injury. The same symptoms of whiplash can also be the result of an undetected brain injury.
"Don't let people minimize a whiplash injury", Mike says. "There are movies that joke about it, and people make fun of lawyers on whiplash cases. But the reality is, we have learned that many times in a whiplash case you may have a closed head injury -- and a closed head injury is really a brain injury."
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the sudden, violent back-and-forth movement of the neck. Studies have shown that it most often occurs as a result of a rear-end automobile accident, but whiplash can also result from a sports injury or even a roller coaster ride gone wrong. The most common symptoms of whiplash are constant neck pain, stiffness of the upper back and neck, and headaches. Whiplash is most commonly treated with pain medication and rehabilitation.
But some cases of whiplash can also be accompanied by a brain injury. Mike urges anyone who has experienced a traumatic back or neck injury to seek comprehensive medical treatment, particularly if that injury results in blurred vision, headaches, forgetfulness or confusion.
"MRIs and CAT scans do not always show the brain injury", Mike explains. "You need to look further if you have those symptoms. You will need a neuropsychological exam, as well as a procedure called a SPECT scan, which looks deeper into the brain tissue. Make sure that your whiplash is not actually a brain injury that can end up being a problem for the rest of your life."
