Drawing on 19 years of research across 40 countries and the principles behind his bestselling book Complex Adaptive Leadership, Nick Obolensky combines Complexity Science, Chinese wisdom, and AI to deliver guaranteed, measurable leadership results for organisations operating in an increasingly volatile world.

-- Nick Obolensky, founder of Agile Plus Leadership International Ltd, inventor of Complex Adaptive Leadership, and bestselling author of Complex Adaptive Leadership: Embracing Paradox and Uncertainty, has enabled the CALAgility System, an AI-supported leadership development platform to deliver guaranteed, measurable results for organisations and individuals around the world navigating complex, fast-changing environments.

The system represents the latest evolution of a body of work Obolensky has been developing for nearly two decades. First published in 2010 and through multiple subsequent editions, his book Complex Adaptive Leadership: Embracing Paradox and Uncertainty has become a reference point in the field, combining complexity science and organisational psychology and drawing on 19 years of research conducted across 40 countries. The CALAgility System takes those principles and translates them into a practical, online, AI-supported and highly interactive group learning programme that delivers measurable outcomes, including high ROI, increased productivity, greater innovation, and reduced stress.

Nokia Americas had put hundreds of staff through the program, and now their alumni managers are delivering to others in the firm around the world. The results continue to be impressive:

  • 100% agree their leadership capability has been improved
  • 90% report increased personal productivity, as well as better work/life balance and reduced stress
  • 85% report their teams have increased productivity and engagement

Many report it is the best leadership development program they have done, with the views of Brigitte Johnson a senior PMO Change Manager a typical example;

“This CALAgility course has been a life-changer in both my personal and professional life. I have not only reduced unnecessary long work hours, but I have abruptly recognised the error of my ways. I was able to bring enrichment to my personal life, creating time to enjoy my grandchildren. Team morale and camaraderie is boosted. Without a doubt, this has been the best course of my career. It should be a must for all of corporate America.”

Alan Marchant, the senior Executive Sponsor of the program in America, said:

“Much of the fear and frustration in the organization relates to feeling overworked…CALAgility changed the expectation that people should be always appearing 'busy’, and is changing the culture of the organization”

Nick Obolensky’s View on Leadership

Obolensky's central argument, developed through decades of leadership practice and academic research, challenges the dominant model that leadership is only something done by leaders, and great leaders are needed for great leadership. That has shaped organisational thinking for generations. His position is that in a VUCA world, the traditional assumption that leaders should know the answers and lead those beneath them is not only outdated but counterproductive. Leadership needs to be a dynamic where followers as well as managers lead in a dynamic beyond traditional and static defined roles, positions, or competencies.

That conviction has its roots in his earliest professional experience. As a young British Army Major, Obolensky quickly learned that his professional soldiers were more knowledgeable than he was in their specific domains.

"I learned that knowing how to follow those you lead was as important as knowing how to lead those who follow," Obolensky has said. "This needs the personal ability to be agile and adaptive, realising when to lead and when to follow."

A later pivotal moment as an FTSE Director reinforced a complementary principle. "Everyone is a star. You just have to enable them to shine. And if they are not shining, your responsibility as a leader is to either remove the clouds, the barriers outside their control, or move them to a place where they can shine."

These experiences, alongside his research, inform the CALAgility System's approach: leadership development that works at all levels of an organisation, not just for managers, and that builds the agile, self-organising dynamics that allow teams and organisations to perform sustainably under pressure.

Obolenksy’s Emphasis on Western Science and Eastern Wisdom

What distinguishes the CALAgility System from conventional leadership development programmes is its synthesis of two distinct intellectual traditions. Modern Western Complexity Science provides the analytical and systems-thinking framework. Ancient Chinese wisdom provides the philosophical foundation for understanding paradox, balance, and adaptive behaviour in human systems.

Obolensky argues that this combination addresses something most leadership programmes miss: the non-linear, paradoxical nature of how organisations actually function. Strategy, change management, and leadership in complex environments cannot be reduced to linear models and directive frameworks. They require a different kind of thinking and mindset, and a different kind of leader and follower. Effective followership is as important as effective leadership.

The AI element of the CALAgility System supports this by enabling more personalised reporting for participants. His firm continues to explore this new technology, with Multi Agentic Generative Systems (MAGS) AI, as well as operational and organisational digital twinning (ODT/DTO). And the online scalable delivery achieves results better than traditional offline interventions, making it particularly suited to multinational organisations seeking cross-national strategy, cooperation, and performance improvement within realistic time, budget, and environmental constraints.

A Career Built From the Ground Up

Obolensky's credibility in the leadership space is grounded in an unusually broad range of lived experience. His career has encompassed roles as a British Army Major, a qualified Mountain Guide, Rescue Diver, and Survival Instructor, a FTSE Director leading 12,000 staff, and a CEO of multiple NGOs and startups. That practitioner background has informed and been informed by his parallel career as a professor at blue-chip business schools, a researcher, best-selling author, consultant, executive coach, and award-winning leadership developer.

His work spans executive leadership and talent development, non-linear strategy, large-scale organisational and culture change, and change management, delivered to clients around the world.'.
