-- The Beacon Design Collective Inc., a carbon-negative creative studio based in Hope, British Columbia and recognised as a Top Nonprofit Branding Company 2024 by Clutch, has published guidance from founder and CEO Dani Vachon on what she describes as one of the most consistent patterns in nonprofit communications: that the projects most likely to underperform are those in which creative and design work begins before the audience, the message, and the communication goals have been fully understood.
Vachon's position, developed through more than a decade of working with nonprofits, NGOs, and government agencies, is that investing in a structured discovery process before beginning any strategy or design work significantly improves the likelihood that the finished materials will reach and resonate with the audiences they are intended to serve.
Why Discovery Matters Before Design
Beacon's approach begins with what the studio calls Understanding and Discovery, a stage designed to develop a clear picture of the organisation's goals, the audience it is trying to reach, the barriers standing between the organisation's message and that audience's understanding, and the context in which the communication will be received.
In Vachon's assessment, many nonprofit communication projects encounter difficulties not because of weaknesses in creative execution but because the assumptions made early in the process about the audience and the message go unchallenged until the work is already complete. A discovery process is designed to surface and examine those assumptions before they become embedded in the work.
"We won't touch a pencil until we understand the organisation, the content, the audience, and the approach," Vachon says. "The goal is to ensure every deliverable is built for the specific people it is designed to reach, not for the organisation producing it."
From Understanding to Output
Beacon's seven-stage process, which moves from Understanding and Discovery through Brand and Foundation Assessment, Research, Strategy, Planning, Delivery, and Measurement and Optimisation, is built around the principle that understanding must precede design at every stage.
The studio's documented client work reflects this approach. When Oxfam Canada engaged Beacon on the Stuff She Makes campaign, the creative decisions, including the use of bright colours, fashion-forward imagery, and direct copy, were grounded in a specific understanding of the audience the campaign needed to reach and what would move them. The campaign produced a 235 percent improvement in ad performance within 30 days, alongside increases in signed petitions and donations.
Vachon attributes that result not to creative execution alone but to the clarity of audience understanding that preceded it.
A Positioning Built Around Understanding
Beacon's current positioning reflects this philosophy directly. The studio describes its approach as designed for understanding, a framing that reflects its view that the purpose of communication design is not to produce materials that look good but to produce materials that achieve understanding in the specific audiences they are designed to reach.
"From everything an organisation knows, to something their audience knows," Vachon says. "That is the transformation we are trying to produce."
The studio's guarantee, a minimum 25 percent increase in website donation rates for the nonprofits it works with, is offered as a reflection of its confidence in the connection between audience-centred process and measurable communication outcomes.
