-- The Beacon Design Collective Inc., a carbon-negative creative studio based in Hope, British Columbia and recognised as a Top Nonprofit Branding Company 2024 by Clutch, has published analysis from founder and CEO Dani Vachon on the measurement and evaluation stage of nonprofit communications, setting out why knowing whether a communication investment has worked is not just a reporting requirement but a strategic asset.
In Vachon's assessment, many nonprofit organisations approach measurement as something that happens after a communications project is complete rather than as something designed into the project from the beginning. That sequencing, she argues, is one of the reasons so many organisations find it difficult to answer the question that funders and boards ask most consistently: did this work?
Measurement Begins at Strategy, Not Delivery
Beacon's approach to measurement begins at the strategy stage, not at the delivery stage. Before any materials are produced, the studio works with clients to define the specific outcomes the communications need to produce and the success measures that will determine whether those outcomes have been achieved. Those measures are specific to the audience, the goal, and the intervention. A campaign designed to increase petition signatures is measured differently from a website redesigned to improve donation conversion.
"The question funders and boards ask most consistently is: did this work?" said Dani Vachon, Founder and CEO of Beacon Design Collective. "We build the conditions to answer that question clearly before the work begins."
A Case Study in Measurement-Led Communications Design
Beacon's work with Nature Conservancy of Canada illustrates how a measurement-first approach can reshape the way an organisation communicates its annual impact. The organisation's annual reporting had previously relied on dense, text-heavy documents that made it difficult for stakeholders to grasp the scale of the work being done. Beacon's strategy stage identified the specific data points, including location, hectares protected, and habitats and species, that needed to be measurable and comparable year over year, then built a repeatable snapshot format around them.
The result was a 40-page report that turned each year's results into a clear, trackable record.
Why Measurement Compounds Over Time
Vachon's broader argument about measurement concerns what happens across multiple projects rather than within a single one. An organisation that measures consistently builds a body of evidence about what works for its specific audience, in its specific context, at its specific stage of development. That evidence becomes the foundation on which the next communications project is built, and the one after that.
Beacon describes this as building an ecosystem in which understanding compounds instead of resetting with every project. Each deliverable builds on what came before. Each measurement cycle adds to the organisation's knowledge of its audience. Each project starts from a more informed position than the last. The result, over time, is a communications function that becomes more effective and more efficient simultaneously.
