-- Facing On-Site External Distractions, She Achieves a Personal Breakthrough Through High-Level Athletic Skill

NEW YORK (AP) — At a world-class tournament site, Bai Zhilin hooked the aerial strap with her elbow, touched the top of her head with the tip of one toe, and held a backward-bent single-leg posture.

At that moment, the competition’s background music suddenly deviated from its rhythm.

At the instant of the disruption, she swept her gaze across the audience stands, her gaze settling on the coach’s exclusive seat, which sat empty. Faint murmurs rippled through the stands as the air conditioning in the venue intensified.

The lights above the arena began to change, with scattered beams gradually converging until they focused on her alone. She turned her head slightly upward and fixed her gaze. She immediately adjusted her posture and changed the planned full sequence of moves.

Gripping the main aerial strap high with both hands, she flung the side aerial hoop outward. The hoop traced a full arc through the air, pulling her body off its original axis.

In an inverted position, she hooked the strap with one leg, tightened her body, and kept spinning. She then slid rapidly down the strap to the top of the hoop. At the top, she spun continuously around the hoop as a pivot, then shifted sideways, transitioning from a single-hand grip to an elbow hold while suspended beside the hoop.

Sparse applause broke out during the sequence and quickly swelled into a roar that filled the entire venue. The coach at ringside was turned sideways, talking to others, and never looked up. Only when the applause engulfed the arena did the noise draw his attention, prompting him to look toward the center of the stage. After seeing the performance, the coach raised his phone to film. While filming, he glanced down at the screen, looked up again, and only then realized it was Bai competing.

When the final results were announced, Bai claimed the tournament championship.

Reflecting on her journey, Bai said: “There have been twists, doubts, and pressure. Reaching this point surprises even myself.”

Addressing the challenges of her cross-disciplinary career, Bai said that while such transitions bring difficulties, the multi-dimensional perspectives gained can help people make better choices in complex situations.

After the competition, Bai looked at the photo her coach took of the performance, stared at it for two seconds, closed the screen, and then looked up at her own reflection in the mirror.

When asked whether she would collaborate again with a foreign coach, Bai gave no response and said she would focus on herself.

After the awards ceremony, crowds flooded the exit passages and the venue became crowded. Bai stood at the center of the arena as spectators and fellow competitors came forward to congratulate her. The coach remained on the periphery of the crowd, separated from Bai by more than 20 meters. Bai glanced toward the coach’s direction, made brief eye contact, and stood motionless at the center of the stage.
