-- Associum, an AI-native production platform for professional services, has launched to address what its founders describe as a critical gap in how AI is currently being used across finance and consulting: the gap between AI that produces outputs and AI that produces work professionals can stand behind.
In June, KPMG quietly pulled a flagship report on agentic AI after outside organisations discovered that 40 of its 45 citations had been fabricated or corrupted by an AI model. Months earlier, Deloitte Australia had been forced to partially refund the Australian government after a commissioned report was found to contain AI-fabricated quotes and citations, an episode the US IRS subsequently cited as a cautionary example in its own guidance on responsible AI use. For industries that sell trust by the hour, the incidents identified a specific and consequential risk in the current generation of AI tools.
"The bottleneck in professional work has always been how quickly we can move up the learning curve and make good decisions," says Wesley Barnes, Associum's CEO and a former private equity investor. "We spent years doing high-judgment work that required substantial logistics upfront: researching the facts, digging in data rooms, reformatting data for analysis, and then structuring insights in reports or slide decks. We built the platform we wished we'd had back then to streamline all of that work."
From Draft to Deliverable
Most AI tools, in Associum's assessment, hand professionals a draft that requires checking, sourcing, and reformatting before it can be shared with clients or stakeholders. Associum's founding team, drawn from private equity, management consulting, research, and engineering, designed the platform around deliverables that are near-final and ready to use on completion.
The platform consolidates the analytical tasks that consume a significant portion of an analyst's or associate's working week. Its document intelligence capability indexes any file, spreadsheet, or dataset into a searchable, persistent knowledge base and answers questions with page-level citations. Its multi-agent system runs qualitative and quantitative analysis, including full financial models built cell by cell with live updates and an audit trail, downloadable directly to Excel. Its report generation turns the analysis into citation-grounded memos, briefs, decks, and spreadsheets.
Review and editing is collaborative within the platform, and finished outputs arrive sourced and ready to send. Reusable templates allow firms to encode their own formats and standards once and run every deliverable to that specification, ensuring consistency regardless of who generated the output.
The workflow is structured around three steps: connecting data by uploading documents, linking a data room, and connecting third-party sources; defining the scope by instructing the agents in plain language or selecting a saved template; and reviewing and signing off before exporting to the desired file format. A human reviews and approves the work before it leaves the platform.
A Market Under Pressure
Associum's launch comes at a moment of significant pressure across the professional services sectors it targets. Private equity is managing aging, unsold assets as exit windows remain narrow. Mid-market advisors are being squeezed by megadeals and rewarded only for genuine sector depth. In consulting, AI is compressing billable hours faster than firms can replace them, with 87 percent of consulting firms now fielding client challenges to hourly pricing while leaner teams are expected to maintain output standards.
Associum's position for each of these audiences centres on two distinct value propositions. The first is speed, compressing deal processes, building project deliverables, and indexing past transactions into institutional memory that compounds with each new engagement. The second is accuracy, delivering grounded analysis, consistent across the team, and repeatable to firm standards.
The platform's approach to the citation problem identified by the KPMG and Deloitte incidents is structural rather than procedural. Every output is citation-grounded by default, and team members can review and update facts directly within final spreadsheets, reports, or slide decks before those documents leave the platform. Each claim traces to a verified source.
Addressing the Cost Problem
Beyond reputational risk, Associum also addresses what Barnes identifies as the other significant AI challenge for professional services firms: cost unpredictability. Enterprise spending on generative AI tripled to $37 billion last year, driven by usage growth that outpaced falling token prices. Nearly seven in ten companies report that at least some of their AI initiatives ran over budget, and Gartner expects more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027, citing escalating costs, unclear business value, and inadequate risk controls.
For finance and consulting firms that bill by engagement, an AI tool that cannot attribute spend to a specific engagement, team member, or deliverable creates a governance gap. Under COSO's 2026 guidance on internal control over generative AI, it also creates an audit gap.
Associum tracks cost as an attributable metric rather than a monthly aggregate. The platform provides team leads with a detailed audit of every activity and its cost, broken out by individual team member and tied to the work product and engagement it supports. A partner can see the cost of a given investment committee memo, the analyst who ran it, and how that maps against the fee or deal it belongs to.
The company charges on usage-based credits rather than per-seat licences, across three tiers, allowing teams of any size to select the credit levels they need and relate what they pay directly to the compute a task actually uses.
