-- Hours after the Dallas Mavericks announced an option agreement on 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site in Far North Dallas, Tanya Ragan, President of Wildcat Management and a two-decade stakeholder in downtown Dallas real estate, published a response today making the case that the broader conversation about downtown investment extends well beyond where the Mavericks ultimately build.
"This conversation is not really about basketball," Ragan writes. "It is about growth, infrastructure, connectivity, investment, identity, and who gets to shape a city's future."

Ragan has lived and worked in the downtown Dallas urban core for nearly 20 years, investing through multiple market cycles as the district has transformed into one of the most connected and activated corridors in Texas. She points to what few sites can offer: existing transit infrastructure, walkable density, billions in surrounding civic investment including the $3.7 billion Convention Center redevelopment and the Newpark District, and a resident and worker population already concentrated in the urban core. In her view, downtown doesn't just want the Mavericks. It is built for them.
"The narrative that every developer, investor, or property owner is somehow disconnected from the community is lazy and outdated," Ragan writes. "Many of us are the community. We live here. We work here. We built businesses here. We stayed when other people left."
A four-time GlobeSt Women of Influence honoree, 2025 GlobeSt Women of Influence, 2024 REDnews Texas Commercial Real Estate Icon, and Dallas Business Journal Most Inspiring Leader, Ragan says the response to today's news reflects a pattern she has watched play out across Dallas's growth.
"Cities evolve slowly until suddenly they evolve all at once," she writes. "What people are reacting to right now is momentum."
She adds: "Regardless of where the Mavericks ultimately land, I support continued investment, connectivity and momentum in downtown Dallas. I support growth in the urban core rather than endless sprawl that pulls energy further away from the city center. Most importantly, I support people who stayed committed to downtown long before it became trendy to do so."
"This conversation is bigger than basketball," Ragan writes. "It is about the future of Dallas."
