The “Duddell Street Gas Lamps” exhibit faithfully reproduces the granite steps of Duddell Street and its four gas street lamps, which have over 160 years of history. These gas lamps were declared a monument in 1979. Their soft, warm light creates a romantic atmosphere, making them a popular filming location for many productions. The exhibition piece includes miniature figures of Anita Mui from “Dream Partner”, Cecilia Cheung and Stephen Chow from “King of Comedy”, and Leslie Cheung from “He’s a Woman, She’s a Man”, recreating their classic scenes on the Duddell Street steps. The latest addition is Anson Lo in his “Business Proposal” costume, showcasing romantic classics from different eras and evoking collective memories for local residents.
In support of the miniature exhibition, Towngas has partnered with Joyful Miniature Association to organise two miniature model workshops, allowing underprivileged families to experience creating miniature models. They have also arranged for guides to take them through the exhibition, explaining the stories behind the models and introducing the history and culture of the Central and Western District. Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Managing Director of Towngas, said, “The Duddell Street gas lamps embody over 160 years of Towngas history and have accompanied Hong Kong people through the city’s development. We hope this exhibition will allow the public to appreciate the Duddell Street gas lamps in detail and gain a new perspective on Hong Kong’s changes.”
The miniature model workshops, led by professional instructors, guided participants in creating miniature models of iconic Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng foods. A Form 2 student, surnamed Lo, said it was his first experience with miniature models, “Making miniature models is so fun. After seeing the exhibition models, I realised these artists are really amazing. I found making even a small model tricky, but they’ve made such detailed and complicated ones.” A Primary 4 student, surnamed Hui, said, “I love the food models. I’m happy I managed to finish making one, and the food models we made look so real.” Mrs Hui, a parent participant, noted that the activity was eye-opening for her son, “Creating miniature models can train children’s attention to detail and concentration, while also allowing them to be creative. Visiting the exhibition afterwards also helps him learn more about Hong Kong.”
To celebrate the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Central and Western District Office is hosting the “Look Closer and Wonder: Central and Western District in Miniature” Exhibition at Pacific Place from now until 8 July. The exhibition showcases 22 models themed around the Central and Western District, presenting important landmarks and characteristic features of the area to the public through miniature models that combine exquisite craftsmanship and innovative technology.
