We were thrilled to be invited to present at this conference where we could help attendees change the way that they think about attracting visitors

-- Co-Owner of 5 Stones, Kim Walker, and Vice President John Robert “J.R.” Portman recently taught at Destination Downtown, a regional conference that attracted more than 200 professionals skilled in preservation-based commercial district revitalization, architecture, event planning, and economic development.

Destination Downtown was sponsored by Louisiana Main Street, Mississippi Main Street Association, and Main Street Arkansas. The Hammond Downtown Development District was named as one of the Top Ten Great American Main Streets in 2019, an honor that led to Destination Downtown being held in Hammond this year.

As a resident and business owner in Downtown Hammond, Walker understands the importance of downtowns being efficient with their funds, time, and marketing strategies.

“There’s no greater impact that could be made than for them to get their marketing message down to a science,” said Walker. “We were thrilled to be invited to present at this conference where we could help attendees change the way that they think about attracting visitors.”

Walker’s course, “How To Use the StoryBrand Framework to Attract Visitors” was intended to help downtown representatives create clear, compelling marketing messages that could be used across all marketing channels.

“Most marketers focus their ‘story’ on themselves, their product, services, features, and benefits. For those attendees, they needed to learn how to reverse that ideal and make their marketing about their visitors,” said Walker.

Portman focused on answering questions about the relevancy, key elements, and common questions associated with websites during his course “What Makes a Great Website?”

A large aspect of 5 Stones’ goals focuses on answering questions for current and prospective clients. Portman stated that educating others on website best practices is mutually beneficial because it forces him and the staff to keep a pulse on industry topics and trends.

“My class had a wide spectrum of people, some of whom had very advanced knowledge of website design, and others who had virtually no understanding of what a website was or how important it was. My challenge was to provide value to all of them,” said Portman.

Although educating attendees of the conference on how to create effective websites and apply the StoryBrand methodology was a top priority, Portman refers to the opportunity as a chance for 5 Stones to be seen as: “Authorities in foundational marketing.”

“Sharing what we know has been integral to our success and it’s also part of our core values,” said Portman. “We’re driven to lead!”

Walker echoed Portman’s ideas about the importance of fostering connections through teaching courses.

“I believe my life’s purpose is to connect, teach, and serve others,” said Walker. “I was able to utilize my natural gifts and abilities to do exactly that. I not only loved every second of it, but I am proud to have been able to serve these attendees by teaching and connecting with so many new people and reconnecting with friends that were there.”
