-- Boxman, one of New Zealand’s most recognised container providers, has entered a new phase backed by 3 Islands Intermodal (3i), the country’s only locally-owned nationwide port services provider. The investment brings new capital, a depot expansion that carries Boxman nationwide alongside 3i’s existing logistics network, and a renewed commitment to the high-quality service Boxman customers have relied on since 1990.
For customers, it’s business as usual and then some. Boxman will go on operating with the same regional focus it has always had, with decision-makers rooted in local communities rather than centralised in Auckland. Backed by 3i’s 700-strong nationwide workforce and deep logistics expertise, the business can now reach more Kiwis in more places than ever before.
Gavin McIntyre, CEO of 3 Islands Intermodal, said the decision to buy the business was an easy one:
“We are very pleased to have purchased the Boxman assets and contracts, and to welcome the Boxman team into the 3i family. 3i was a customer of Boxman before the receivership occurred and, having been fortunate to have purchased it out of receivership, we plan to focus it on providing great sales, leasing and modification services to existing and new customers.”
McIntyre said customers can count on the same high-quality service and reasonable pricing they have always had.
“It’s been important for us to keep Boxman in Kiwi ownership, as its owner we are approaching the Boxman offering to customers in the same way that we approached it when we were a customer ourselves. We are excited to work with the Boxman team to grow the business further and advance our customers’ businesses at the same time,” he said.
A depot expansion programme is already under way. A new Boxman depot opened in Mount Maunganui last month, with more openings planned for North-West Auckland, Hamilton, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill over the coming 24 months. The expansion will be matched by investment in upgraded depot facilities, improved container modification services, and greater convenience for customers reaching Boxman’s offering closer to where they live and do business.
3i’s acquisition reflects a wider philosophy: keeping critical New Zealand infrastructure and supply chains in local hands. With 7.5% of 3i owned by its employee trust, the company’s team members are shareholders, a model that drives the long-term thinking and community-minded service that aligns naturally with Boxman’s culture.
McIntyre said the formula for long-term success was simple.
“100% Kiwi ownership, high-quality service at a fair price, and a genuine commitment to helping Kiwi businesses grow. That’s what we’re here for, and that’s exactly what Boxman has always stood for.”
For existing and prospective Boxman customers, nothing changes on the ground, except more options, more locations, and stronger backing than ever before.
