Zero-Waste Reusable and Swappable Coffee Cups: Kickstarter Campaign Launched

A crowdfunding campaign for Takebacks, an initiative designed to reduce waste from single-use coffee cups, has been launched on Kickstarter by Periva.

Following the launch of Takebacks' Kickstarter campaign, supporters can help fund the distribution of reusable coffee cups to local coffee shops, promoting sustainability and raising awareness of the impact of single-use cups.

According to One Planet Network, approximately 500 billion single-use coffee cups are discarded annually worldwide, with this number expected to increase as single-use cups become more readily available in low- and middle-income countries. Around 50% of these cups are lined with plastic, making them difficult to recycle.

Periva’s Takebacks campaign aims to offer an eco-friendly alternative by creating a network of reusable coffee cups at participating cafes. Campaign backers can select their preferred local coffee shop when making a contribution which will then receive Takebacks cups when the campaign reaches its funding target. Customers will then be able to exchange their used cups for clean ones on each subsequent visit to their local cafe, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes waste.

Periva explains that each cup only needs to be reused 12 times to become carbon neutral. The cups are also made in the USA with high-quality, BPA-free plastic and are dishwasher-safe for durability and ease of reuse.

The cups also feature QR codes that participants can scan with the Periva app. With the app, users can create unique profiles to track their environmental impact from participating in the initiative. They can also view data on the store’s impact and information about the lifecycle of each cup.

Alongside environmental benefits, participating businesses can also benefit financially. Takebacks explains that washing a reusable cup typically costs a business around 10-15 cents, while single-use cups often cost 20 cents or more per piece. Additionally, participation in the initiative may help to attract customers as a growing number of people seek out businesses that prioritize sustainability.

“Takebacks isn’t just about cups—it’s about creating a cultural shift,” says a spokesperson for Takebacks. “By backing the Takebacks Kickstarter campaign, you can help create a critical mass of participation that will encourage coffee shops to join this zero-waste initiative.”
