-- Frenectomies, or surgeries that release lip and tongue ties, are now offered at Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. They use laser technology to perform the surgery to minimize downtime and swelling.

With the clinic’s new surgical techniques, frenectomies can be performed in infants as young as six weeks. The procedure only takes around 30 minutes to complete and does not interfere with the baby’s ability to breastfeed.
According to Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, a frenectomy is an oral surgery that modifies the frenum, which is a band of connective tissue that joins two areas. The surgery is usually done on one of two prominent frena (plural of frenum) – the one that connects the top gums to the lips, and another one that connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. A frenectomy is required when the connective tissue is too short or tight that it prohibits the free movement of the tongue or lips. The clinic explains that if a child is unable to freely move their tongue and lips, they develop speech impediments and teeth and gum problems.
Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics explains that frenectomies can be done on infants and small children as soon as the condition is discovered. Timely intervention allows the baby to have normal jaw development, and free lip and tongue movement. The surgery also reduces the risk of gingivitis.
In older children, the clinic numbs the area before making the incision. Sometimes, stitches are required to close the cut. After the surgery, antibacterial mouthwash, pain medicine, and cold compress are prescribed to minimize discomfort.
At Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, the dentists undergo at least three years of additional training to become board-certified pediatric dental specialists. The clinic’s fun, playful atmosphere puts children at ease and makes their visits fun and enjoyable.
“I bring all of my children to this practice and have been doing so for years. The dentists are highly competent, engaging, kid-friendly, and practical. They never judge; they just help,” a satisfied client said.
